I usually fill my fresh water with the auto shutoff (selector pointing up)and the tank will fill right to the very top (no airspace at the top of the tank) before shutting off. Yesterday I filled the tank and had it on Manual Override (pointing down). It filled to about an inch from the top and then suddenly dumped water from the overflow drain...down to about 2" from the top. It would not take any more beyond that point and just dumped any new water. I tried later on the automatic override setting and still could not get that last 2" to fill.
Any thoughts? Does your fresh tank fill to the top?

Mine always fills to the top if I want manually, but than again I don't have all those automatic things you big guys have.
Would think if in manual override it would fill to the top could it be they marked the selector incorrectly.

I would be interested in knowing what the digital readout says your tank level is when it is in fact two inches below the true top of the tank itself as this may be an air space by design.
I've not looked at my tank, but I certainly will do that tomorrow..

Bob,
Thanks for checking. My 2005 has the older light-bar readout up in the driver area and no digital readout at the front or tank. The light bars are not the most accurate so I really don't trust them.
In the past I have been able to get a full tank using the auto shutoff feature. It would take awhile but the tank had no airspace at the top. The other day I had the tank to within 1" of the top on the manual setting and all of a sudden it seemed to dump (fast) water down to about 2" of airspace then just continued to overflow the water at a slower pace as it was going through the filter. I switched it back to automatic but it continued to dump the excess.
I will give Newmar a call and see if they have any thoughts. We do a bit of dry camping so having that extra capacity is helpful.
I will also try agin next week just on the auto shutoff setting to see if a difference right from the start of the filling process.
We are always learning something new. Thanks for all the help we get from this forum. We really appreciate what we have learned from all of you.

On further explaning on your part the over flow hose is attached to top of tank to fitting or pipe, the pipe may extend into tank a couple of inches keeping the air space at top of tank.
If you have split tanks you would have two over flow vents,Essex may have only one tank.
