Finally Measured Height

I have just been going by my Newmar paperwork for height, plus I added an inch.

Today when returning to our regular site from a short trip I took my 6' level up on the roof and dropped a tape measure from the end of it over the side. My DW was assisting and what we discovered was that the highest point was the OEM sat dome at the front. It was 12'10.5". The next highest point were the air conditioners and they were between 12'7" and 12'7.5".

My site is all concrete and almost level, had my suspension aired, and my 24' trailer attached. As full timers we have over 3,400 pounds of extras just in the coach.

I probably won't be comfortable going under any overpass unless it is 13' or over, and even then I would probably duck.

Good to know, I haven’t seen any 13 foot warnings, have seen a lot of 14 foot warnings. Thanks for sharing

With air suspension the load in the rig should not vary at all since that's controlled by the ride height and air valves.

So, how did your measurements compare to Newmar's published height?

That’s about right. I consider mine 13’ after measuring and came with similar numbers like you.

If I recall correctly it said either 12'10" or 12'11", so it was almost spot on.

Being a previous owner of two fivers I just wasn't comfortable until I actually looked at the numbers on my own tape measure, nothing against Newmar. I swear most fiver manufacturers just throw a number out there because they have no idea what you will be towing with.

Just two days ago I encountered my first no-go situation with low clearance. It was under 13’ and I decided to play it safe. It was a little awkward getting out of the situation on a narrow two-lane road with a toad, but I lived to fight another day.

Maybe you could have dumped the air bags and crawled under the bridge if there was no way of backing up?

Back when (a long time ago) I rode with an instructor for a couple of guys taking their CDL road test. After going under an overpass, the instructor asked what the height was. After asking the students, he asked me, and nobody came up with the right answer. (Everybody guessed wrong). The point of the story is, don't take chances. PS: There was no posting on that overpass.

I have given road tests for prospective oversize drivers. (aircraft/aerospace industries transport company)
One of the queries that I asked them during the road test.... If they cannot visually (mentally) measure an obstacle's height / width...or do not "register" the posted warning signs.... they did not have enough experience moving oversize loads in the "Real World" to be hired by the employer...

Where is this bridge? They should hang some streamers from a cable across the road a 100' before the bridge.
