Flushing Dometic Below Freezing

Anyone know if we can just pour a couple of liters of rv antifreeze into our electric Dometic toilets to flush them when operating in below freezing temperatures while the water system is winterized, or do we need to rig up a bottle of antifreeze that the toilet can draw up through the 12 volt flo-jet pump?

Pretty common solution for those who want to head out for warmer climates but still have to pass through freezing weather to get there.

Pour half a gallon into both black and grey tanks first and then I would think you could even dilute the RV antifreeze to half strength for toilet flushing from then on.

Keep track of how much water (from jugs kept inside) you put down the kitchen and bathroom sinks and add some neat antifreeze to keep the tank copntents at half strength.

Dumping antifreeze into toilet really only freeze protects contents of black tank, not the toilet. The parts of the toilet vulnerable to freeze are the water valve, sprayer (if equipped) and the chambers and hoses connected between valve and bowl. The only way fresh water could get into those parts is if you turn on pump and flush antifreeze out of the plumbing lines. You could flush with a jug of plain water, then throw an ounce of antifreeze in the bowl after the flush valve closes to keep seal from freezing. Of course if you are moving about or traveling in the RV, probably interior temp is above 32º anyway so toilet isn't going to freeze.

Thanks for the inputs, but what I need to know is whether operating the toilet without pumping antifreeze through it will damage the toilet mechanism. We intend to flush with full strength antifreeze, but need to know if just pouring it into the bowl will damage the toilet pumping mechanism on the Dometic Electronic Porcelain toilet system in our Newmar Dutch Star.

TinMan Trvlr, you describe a very common method of flushing while winterized as Tony Lee describes above. Whether you have a Vacu-Flush, Macerator or electric valved gravity Dometic toilet, using Antifreeze straight or diluted will not hurt any of the mechanisms.

Again, thanks for the input. We have not yet found an owners manual for the Dometic toilets, but I believe they are the vacu flush version. Because this model of toilet pumps water into the bowl once the flush button is pushed (which already has a goodly level of water in it "pre-flush") what I need to know is whether we need to provide the toilet with pumped antifreeze via the coach water pump so the built in pump in the toilet is not running "dry" even though we will have poured antifreeze into the bowl before flushing. I appreciate receiving the benefit of your experience with these systems.

The VacuFlush system pump is a 12v DC operated bellows pump that is always a dry pump. It is outside of the pressure tank that draws vacuum on the closed system. You'll be just fine in the manner you're using it.
