Market Insiders tell me that Newmar will forgo the UFO Chassis as a viable platform for 2008, but instead will offer a FRED to fill the price point beneath the Mountain Aire Gasser, which will be shelved, perhaps permanently.

Any thoughts by members?!

That was the message at the Tampa RV Super Show, in January. Not in your words, but the executives made the point that between the UFO and FRED, FRED is what they are working on. Newmar is going to let other manufacturers determine the future of the UFO. This is not a quote, but the gist of their comments.

Can't speak to the viability of the UFO. It's too soon to tell. Newmar is taking a "wait and see" attitude and Tiffin is "considering" it but no commitments yet. A rear gas pusher will have some advantages from the technical side of things but a lot will depend upon how it's priced and how marketable it is. It'll be interesting to see how that works out to find out how it's sales will be. If they can price it right, and the manufacturers jump on board it'll be a wildsuccess. If not, it'll be a dismal failure from a marketing standpoint. Personally, I hope it succeeds.

As to the FRED, Tiffin is doing wonders with it. The Allegro Bay owners love their FREDs. It doesn't have the engine noise that all the naysayers predicted but it does have lots of torque, fuel economy, and cargo carrying capacity. It's ride and handling is equal to the best Workhorse and the upcharge over a gasser isn't that bad. It's a great bridge between a gasser and DP. I think Newmar will do very well with a Kountry Star FRED.
