It does not sound normal, but may be a minor adjustment that is needed. Call Spartan and describe the issue. If an adjustment is required, a chassis shop that handles Spartan would be better equipped for the job.

I would question it also.

My coach does not do this.

Neil,
Good luck in your quest to get this fixed. My signature coach drove like a dog hunting rabbits. I made the pilgramage to Spartan in Charlotte, Mich. They said there was nothing wrong. The bottom line is I spent $5K for a steering stabilzer and now the coach drives perfect.

You are not alone.

One inch of play is not a lot. I'v never seen a steering wheel that didn't a small amount of empty space at top dead center.

Neil,
I had a good 2-2.5" of play in our steering. Spartan said this was within spec. I finally contacted a new Spartan service center in my own backyard that agreed with me and went to bat for me. I now have a new steering box with very little play. (Cheers for Tri City Truck Center in Ft. Walton Beach, Fl.)

I would also say, as another poster did, that 1" of play isn't bad. Also, some gearboxes have a lash adjustment. Have you checked yours?

my 08 dsdp 43 foot has the play in the steering. I have it in the shop now. First off the shop noticed the drive axel is not square with the tag. Spartan is sending new bolts to fix that first then I will drive it to see what it does..........
