If those pins are dirty or rusted, they can prevent pads from releasing and cause squealing. In addition, usually a rubber-like coating is often put on the back of the brake pads to prevent vibration.

In drum brakes, there are springs that should retract the shoes from the drum and prevent squealing.

In either case, it requires removing the tire and wheel to inspect.

You might try a few hard fast brake applications to remove any glaze on the brake pads or shoes, see if the noise stops.
I don't agree with you!
Do you have air brakes?

Just curious, why wasn't this covered by the chassis warranty?

A fellow in my Camp Freightliner class at the Lewisburg International Rally said he was able to get it covered under warranty. I tried this too, but wasn't successful.

I've driven many vehicles with full air brakes and my RV has air over hydraulic disc brakes. I missed the OPs issue, many have chimed in with the sound of air release after application of air brakes. I wouldn't call that a warranty issue, but obviously some shops have replaced them under warranty to satisfy the customer.

I've worked on brake systems on all size and a variety of makes over the years, from mechanical (Model A) to Nash Metropolitan, a variety of VWs, MG TD, GMC bus (air) and on and on.
