Garmin RV 770 LMT or Rand McNally RV Tablet 80

Garmin RV 770 LMT $399
or
Rand McNally RV Tablet 80 $499

I have seen reviews all over the place on these two GPS units. Anyone that has one and wants to share?

There is also the brand new Garmin RV 770 LMT-S out for the $400 price range. I have no idea what the "S" gives you.

I have the Garmin RV660 LMT and have not been impressed with the RV Routing feature. In fact, I have turned off the RV feature and use it as a regular GPS. Other than the RV feature I do like it.

Love my Garmin 770.... but I've always used Garmin in cars, boats, etc. so I'm familiar with the Garmin interface.

I thought about Rand McNally RV Tablet 80, I went where I was comfortable.

I do not have the Garmin, that I'm aware of, but I do have 4 vehicles, each with a built in GPS. In addition I have 1 Rand McNally portable and one new tablet. One of the 4 vehicles is the motor home and it too has a Rand McNally built-in.

I find the Rand superior to the other makes in a Jaguar, a Porsche and a Jeep. While they all can get screwed up on occasion, the real issue is for them to simplify the input. Many times, all but the RM's, are terrible at locating where you want to go. They want the area that the address is located in......................This can be an issue for localized names within a city or area. Nope! I much prefer the RM platform.

Others may find the other makes easy to navigate, but I sure don't. But, it's just my opinion.

Hi! The Tablet 80 is no longer being made. It wasn't even out very long! In fact, I was interested in it too so I called Rand McNally and they told me they were having too many issues with it. They did not specifically tell me what the issues were.

I have had the RM 7710 and the Garmin 760 LMT. My biggest regret was wasting my money on the RM. It died last year and we were ecstatic. It's routing was bad, highway info like speed limits was wrong so many times.
Now the Garmin is a true champ. I trust it!!

I bought a Garmin 760LMT, last year, and it's one of the best GPS I've owned for RVing. Its got a good size screen and good voice and map directions. I can recommend this series Garmin..

I bought a Garmin 770 LMT when it came out. The RV routing was terrible. The unit bothered me in any number of ways to the point that I returned it after using it for 30 days. The packaging and touch screen are great but it really fell down as a GPS in general.

Been using Waze and have found it to be the balance of features and performance.

I have the Garmin RV model but prefer the NX405TRK. Did you not get the 405 in your coach Gary?

I'm a Garmin person, I've used just about every GPS system out there and I'm always returning to Garmin. (my personal preference)

One thing I have found that will make or break the satisfaction deal for most, is the fact most users are not updating their units.

One poster reported taking his Garmin back after 30 days of dissatisfaction, I would ask, did you do the up dates that needed to be done right out of the box?

Any new out of the box GPS will need an update before you put it into use. Things change, like new roads are put in place, some are taken out, or altered for ease of traffic flow.

How long had that GPS been in storage before you brought it?
If you don't have the latest updates, your GPS will try to follow it's last known route.

Also I've run into routing issues with my Garmin because I didn't take the time to set up my preferences in routing. You will never get It perfect, but there are procedures you will have to follow in order to satisfy your needs. This is the norm with any brand GPS.

Portable GPS systems you buy for your car, you get what you pay for, not all can be set up for your particular needs, and are more of an assistant, better than having none at all in most cases.

Read the owner's manual, do the updates and set it up for your needs, but never completely trust it to take the place of common sense.

Have a back up either the phone GPS, hard map, or something I like to do when I'm traversing new territory, use a second GPS just for the map view.

For new territory I always do a map recon prior to starting the trip, very seldom I run into an unpleasant surprise.

Safe Travels

The 770 is brand new so it didn't sit. I updated the software and maps when I received it. In fact, the one thing I really liked about the unit was the built in wifi. Not having to hook up to a laptop to get updates is a nice feature.

Where it fell down is in it's routing. I understand it tries to pick roads suitable for the RV but the routes were almost comical at times. I park my RV 7 miles away but I could not get it to pick a route that didn't take less than 45 minutes. It was really bizarre sometimes.

One weekend in Ohio I found 5 outright map errors including one where the direction it wanted me to go was the wrong way down a one-way (again, I had updated maps).

What finally killed it for me was coming home one evening. I'm less than 3 miles from home when suddenly it wants to take me 3 miles up a dirt road, a mile west and then down a parallel road. 7 miles out of my way and on roads clearly not suited for an RV.

I also set up my routing preferences and made sure all settings were appropriate.

I really wanted to like this unit. The touch screen is gorgeous, it boots quick, the menu's are easy to understand, etc. It just couldn't get me from A to B without using the rest of the alphabet along the way.

And I know there are a few of you "Doubting Thomases" out there that are convinced the problem lies with me and who knows, maybe you're right. But after 40 years of writing award wining software and fixing every neighbors computer within a 20 block radius I think I've earned some street cred.
