gray tank odor

I am just wondering if anyone has found a way to minimize the gray tank odor venting into the coach when you are boon docking for over a week in extreme heat. I do use a natural holding tank treatment that works very well for both tanks. However, when we have over 60% in the grey tank and the temperature gets into triple digits, we just keep getting the gray tank odor venting inside the coach. We don't have any sewer issues, just smelling the gray tank odor coming up through the drains in the sinks. I do run small amounts of water in the bathroom and kitchen sinks to keep the drain pipe curves full of water to try to keep from venting back into the coach. But the next time I use the water and the water runs into the grey tank, we have the smell again.

Any one dealt with this and discover a way to illuminate this problem?

Each drain should have a p trap that keeps water in the drain to block odors. If you have a drain you aren't using the water may have evaporated. Be sure to dump a quart or so of water in every drain.

Visually check each trap to make sure someone didn't cut corners and make the trap too small.

Under each sink also may be a 'cheater vent' used in place of a rooftop vent. These vents can fail and allow odors into the RV. Sniff in the cabinet under the sink, if the odor is stronger there, it's likely the vent.

They are often white rather than the black one pictured.

You may need to check your gray water vent stack. It is supposed to help keep negative pressure on the tank to draw noxious odors outside. Another part of the system is the vacuum breakers located under/around your sinks. This device is supposed to prevent back flow into the coach. Through age the membrane can get stiff or stick open allowing back-flow. If odor is actually from the traps, they might need cleaning out.

All of the above are good suggestions.... also, if you have a clothes washer, make sure there is water in that trap.

And don't forget the shower drain. First thing I do now when setting up is to pour some water down all drains.

Two things we have used for gray water tank odor. We put the 360 vent covers which have worked great and we also purchased cheap rubber sink drain covers and put them on all drains before we switched to 360 outside vent covers.

The OEM cover on your gray roof vent is very restrictive to airflow, replace it and your black tank vent with one of these and you won't have anymore problems.
