We are on our way south and stopped for the night in Caldwell, Idaho. We got all our slides in but one. While trying to get it in, it started to come in for a second, then dropped back out. The motor sounds like it is working.HELP! Thanks.

Peter,
A little more information please.
Which slide it it?
When the slide trys to close, does it make any sounds you normally do not hear?
Something cheap and quick for you to try is:
I assume it is cold where you are now. If you can get some folks to help push the slide as the motor brings it in, that may work. I've had this happen, to me, when I was in cold weather. When I returned to warm weather the problem went away. My solution is never to take the coach where it is cold.

Hi Peter, Gary's solution may well work. It is probably just stiffer in the cold weather as he said. There is an adjustment to overcome the issue if it continues. The slide motors automatically shutdown when the slide is fully in or fully out. This is done with an adjustable amp setting. If the amps rise to the set figure the motor shut off. The adjustment for each is located in the basement on most models. The cotrol boxes should be mounted on the overhead frame rails on each side. If you have two slides on each side, there will be two boxes on each side. The forward one is for the forward slide, so it's pretty straight forward. The adjustment requires a very small screwdriver. Turn it very little to the right.
Anyway, it is not a serious issue.

One other thought Peter, raise the side the slide will not come in on. Using the jacks, elevate the side slightly to aid the motor using gravity. Don't go to far, just off center. This will only help get you out of there, but you will still want to address the issue and adjust the amp pots.

The electric motor just kept grinding the gears. The manual retraction proceedure did not work. The gears just ground away. It sounds like the gears were stripped.
I loosened the torque nut and used a Come Along to winch the slide in. It was very difficult to get the drop down slide up onto the level area to close it.
I locked the slide arms, and carried on.
Will have to replace the slide gear box.
Newmar advsed they will not sell me the gear box parts to repair the slide, advising I can only get the parts thru a dealer??????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you for all your suggestions.
The raising of the one side on the jacks would have helped pushing in the slide.
Thank you all.

There are only two ways Newmar can sell parts, as per an agreement with their dealers, and that is either direct when you are at the factory or at a rally where they are doing service work.
Try calling this number; 269-625-1495. This guy, Tim, purchased Hart RV parts when they closed their doors on 10/24/08.

Thank you for the info. On the advice and direction of our selling dealer, who purschased an extended warranty on the unit when we purchased it, we will be taking the unit into the Newmar dealer in Temecula to diagnose the root cause of this slide faling to come in.
If I do not get it repaired at this dealer, I may have to use your parts source.
I will post the rest of yhr story as it unfolds for eveyone's info ans future use.
Tks
