Help! Steps issues

2018 Dutch Star in case you have signatures turned off.

Our steps are acting up. They either donít go in when we start the engine and close the door or they go in and bounce back out. I think they even came out for no reason while we were driving. What can I check?

Our DS is a week over a year and things are suddenly failing. Very sad 😢

Hi irv1997,
Call Newmar CS immediately. Get it documented. They can also provide some thoughts as to the problem. Newmar is pretty good at doing warranty work when just out of warranty.

Either the steps are not sensing they are in or they are being told to go out when driving. The steps are just slaves to the sensors that tell them where they are and what they are to do.

I had a similar problem this week. The magnetic switch on the door frame was not responding to the magnet in the door, so the system thought the door was open all the time. I pulled out the switch as far as it would go, about 1", and gave it a good tap. It is working now. But if your steps are actually extending while you are traveling there may be another problem.

A poor ground to that door switch, the wire from switch goes to the chassis frame and is just screwed into frame and screw can loosen or road salts and moisture can make for poor ground connection.
Screw needs to be removed area sanded, plus spade wire connection and maybe a new screw.
When done paint with liquid tape paint to keep clean.
There is also a short green wire from control unit with wire spade clip under one of the mounting screws for control unit, the heavy green wire from control unit is the the frame also but is well connected to chassis frame usually not causing problems.
CAUTION when working under steps make sure your upper body is in no way under step, or steps could crush your chest.

This is very disconcerting. So far our steps have been flawless; much better than previous coaches. Would like to know how you resolved.

No resolution yet. Problem is still too intermittent. If we open and close the door about 10 times, they will usually go in and stay in.

Ironically, we had a step issue with our last MH (Thor). We were really hoping for no repeats in that area with our DS. No such luck I suppose.

Dropping coach off at Newmar next Monday so they can fix a few things they poorly fixed two weeks ago. Maybe they will look at the new step issue too. Hopefully we can get there from Alabama without too much trouble.

A loose dirty ground connection will change with the temperatures, you need to check the wire connections for switch or stay in warmer locations so maybe your steps work more often.

Just replaced the magnetic door switch on mine and it is working fine now. No ground problems, just a bad switch. I did not get the replacement from PTL but a cheap one from Amazon.
