Oldhiker be sure if you crawl under your steps and you are directly under them and they start working it can crush you pretty good so be careful. If you find out it is the motor I believe it is a window regulator might be able to get it from a auto parts shop get the numbers off of it and google it. Easy to Change out. Hope this helps

Today my steps wouldn’t go in when I took RV to shop for slide roller replacement. Just needed a lubing they said. No charge , and they work fine now.

Yes it's on the jam somewhere but on mine it's not visible. It senses when the door is opened or closed.
Old Hiker - note that the magnetic door latch is on the door jamb for the screen door, not the main door. makes sense as you're not necessarily going outside just by opening the main door, but you certainly are if you open the screen door.

Hope that helps.

And I second the comments about lubing the mechanism. I'm not at all handy but I've learned to walk around the outside of the RV with a can of spray silicone and a can of WD40 every couple of months!
