How Often Do You Change Your Air Filter

Was told every other year for the engine. Don't know about the generator.

Thanks Bill. See you had a Safari. I had a 1995 Serengeti. Loved that Coach.

Think both filters kind of depend on miles/hours--we travel about 10-12k miles per year and put about 100 hrs per year on genset. Whether or not you were operating in "severe" conditions, as define by Cummins/Onan, also impacts on change periods. Accordingly, I change both filters about every 3-4 years. Not so worried about dirt/contamination as the filter monitor never shows filter is restricted. What I worry about is deterioration of the paper element due to moisture. Actually heard that the typical engine filter doesn't achieve full filtration capability until used for awhile. IMHO, changing these filters every year is unnecessary--but its your money.......

Filters..

Filters do the very best job of screening just before they plug up completely. It is most likely not necessary to replace them annually. Doing that is a benefit to the manufacturer and a way for them to cover themselves in warranty situations. The paper element does degrade over time as do the adhesives holding them together. A reasonable balance would be to replace both the air filters every other year.
Oil filters are a different story, its the additive package that deteriorates, not the oil. Replacing the oil and oil filter every 10K miles or every year regardless of mileage is prudent.

At the FMCA seminar in Chandler Az. in March Cummins and Spartan recommended replacing engine air filter once a year. There have been some owners who have lost their turbo's because the paper in there air filter has come apart and damage the turbo so it had to be replaced. Part of the problems is when air filter gets wet the glue comes apart and then let the air filter go into turbo. Remember air filter have a date code on the box and you should try to get a air filter less then 6 months old when purchasing new.

Seems to me if the concern is the air filter paper falling apart they should come up with a better design.

Occasionally, we do over 15K in a year. Those years, I change the filter once a year. Under that, I let them go two years.

NEVER blow out a diesel filter and reinstall. I poster last week said he blew his filthy Onan filter out and then put it back. You'll contaminate the clean side and ruin an engine.

I change every 2 to 3 years, depending on my mileage.

Drove less than 2000 miles over the last two years due to late DW's poor health and death. Changed the filter late last year, engine is just too expensive to try and go longer. Cummins recommends two years as the glue can let go and filter material can be sucked into the turbo. $150 every two years is cheap insurance.

Where I go fishing is miles and miles of dirt & gravel roads, so I change engine and gen set filters twice a year... and they needed to be changed in that short time span.
It is not so much the miles but the conditions you are driving in.
