on my 04 dsdp i have to replace my right front jack,it does not retrack all the way, tried new springs but didn't help, two years ago HWH replaced the other three, they called it a substitution, not a replacement or recall,at the time the other three were giving me the same trouble as this one is now and they replace them at no charge,i wanted them to replace all three but the shop said it wasn't warranted, so this is where i am at now,i have to cover the cost, has anyone done job themselves and how much of a job is it

cowboy2,

I have the same problem with the left front on my Journey. I have the jack off and have contacted HWH for an RGA# to send it back. A rebuild is $220.00 with a 4-6 week lead time, and a new one is $350.00 with an 8-10 week lead time.

Frankly I don't know how to get it apart yet. I have found a breakdown on the self acting jacks from HWH's website http://www.hwhcorp.com/HydraulicsandHWHSystems.pdf at the bottom of page 9.

If you look at the breakdown, there is a snap ring at the rod end that acts to prevent the cylinder form overextending past the rod seal when extended.. I have found no way to disengage this snap ring. With that said, the only other way to disassemble is to cut the end cap off, and press the rod out the barrel end. I have been told that HWH used a phenolic seal for the rod seal and this will swell and the result is sluggish or no return from the springs.

I am on the fence as to trying to rebuild myself. I have a metal band saw that I can remove the end cap, so I may get the courage up to try it.

I'll keep you posted as to what I find.

Replaced my front drivers side jack a few years ago. Here is a post I wrote up about it.
I have found if you spray a silicone spray on pistons than wipe downward the piston will become slick and jacks have a easier time of retracting.
Has worked for me since replacement.
Here is a safe way of replacing springs. by Max Hubrich
Here is how you adjust the leveling system . by Max Hubrich
There are four pages previous to when I posted that maybe of interest to you both.
All this information can be found in the Quick Tips & Easy Mods link.

removed the jack with no problem, the electric wires and hydraulic lines have to be uncoupled before lowering the jack, drove the front wheels up on blocks, about 8'' and the air bags were inflated, took the jack to a local john deere dealer that sells construction equipment and asked them to see if was possible to repair it,they said some of there jacks are this design,so know problem there, the reason i went this way was because of the amount it cost to HWH to do the job,i live southern bc canada, with HWHs cost,UPS,duty, import fees,it would be well over $400us, my cost is about $250canadian. the secret to disassembling is the 1/4'' plug about half way up the jack, remove this,it is like a set screw, and it will separate like a normal hydraulic jack

Thats what I like about travels in Canada there is always someone helpful to someone in distress. Had a welder fix broken exhaust pipe and a campground owner supply the cement for toilet pipe that fell out of floor flange into black tank.
Had other problems but my mind forgot.
Always something when you travel wouldn't be any fun other wise.

A friend of mine was having trouble getting jacks to retract. He went to HWH and all the mechanic did was wipe the cylinders down with vaseline. I tryed this and it worked like a charm. So now about every 6 months I use the vaseline and no more sticking jacks.

Good Luck
