HWH Jack Spring Replacement

I have had problems with the HWH rear jacks not retracting on my 2002 Kountry Star. A guy helped me get them back up but said I need to replace the springs. I saw something on you tube showing how to use wood spacers to extend the spring on both the old and new springs so I can do it myself. Have any of you replaced them yourself? Any other ideas?

There is already a set of posts on irv2.com showing how to replace the springs. Just use the search box and you will find all you need to know!

And welcome to the forum!

I tied one end to a tree and the other end to the car and backed up to stretch the spring. I used wood wedges but others have used clothes pegs to hold the spring stretched. Slot the spring ends in to place, extend the jack and the wedges will fall out.

We have an 05 Kountry Star bought it in 2011. All jacks retracted fine when we were buying it but on out 1st outing left front did not come all of the way up. I could help it with a pry bar and get it retracted. I ordered a new set of springs and installed, did not seem to help much. So I had some silicone spray. So I spray a small dab on the ram and using my hand rub it all over the ram it then retracts fine. I do this with ram extended to level MH. Then push the retract button. Probably a seal swollen in cylinder but seems to work fine.

HWH says if you use silicone spray, use it only as a cleaner. Then spray with WD-40 making sure to get enough to where the ram enters the cylinder. There is a seal there that can dry with time.

You dont need another post!

Replacing the springs with wood blocks works just fine. I cut up a Walmart yard stick into one inch chunks. Stretch the springs on the jack and place them in it. Raise the jack and they will be loose enough to get off.
I then bent the old springs to get the wood out and bent new springs in same manner to have Wife place wood into the new springs until long enough to get back on. I only needed about 12 pieces, 6 on each side of a spring, keeping spring straight. Be careful with your fingers getting pinched.

I tried the wood and it didn't work for me.
I attached the one end to the top bracket. Then took a small string and made a loop. Put the loop on the other end of the spring and with a come-along attached somewhere behind spring just crank until the end of spring is even with the hole on ram.

I used this exact method except with a tractor instead of a car and clothes pins instead of wood wedges. I liked the clothes pins because they stay right where you put them. Good luck!

I used my floor jack to raise up one side pulling against the opposite spring. I was able to jack it up high enough to remove or install the spring as the base plate pivots. I did have to be careful with it as I was jacking the base plate up to a very steep angle. It did slip off the jack a couple of times before I got it seated enough to complete the job.

I replaced my springs in 2012. I posted the proceedure that was used with pictures. It was very safe, did not have to fight the problem and it went of with out a hitch.
