Does anyone know if a muffler can be added without harming performance?

You should not need a muffler for you HydroHot. If it is loud you need the air intake adjusted. When out of setting it sounds like a Hollywood muffler on a hotrod, but set correctly it is quite quiet.

I am real sure Aqua Hot specifically does NOT allow mufflers of any type. Resonator pipe extensions maybe. They only recently allowed Gen-Turi extensions. Note that Oasis systems do in fact use a muffler.

Search Roger Berke's site at RV Hydronic Heater Repair - Home and you'll find all the specifics.

I do not think a muffler would make much difference.. Explanation. IF the Hydro Hot works the way I think it does .. Well let me tell what I think.

Engine running it uses excess engine heat to heat the Heating fluid, and hot water for the house as well (if so designed)

Engine off it uses Diesel fuel fired burner to heat the house and water, (And optionally pre-heat the engine)

This type of burner is a jet, constant flame, NOT a Bang Bang Bang like an engine.

The purpose of the muffler on your main engine is to smooth out the Bang Bang bang, With a jet all it would do is add backpressure and reduce performance.

I would take a slightly different approach to quiet your Aqua-Hot exhaust down.

I would have the Aqua-Hot exhaust pipe remade in a larger inside diameter. Your Aqua-Hot probably has 1 ½” inside diameter exhaust. The install manual for the newest units call for 1 ¾” inch diameter.

I would use 2” or even 2 ¼” inside diameter exhaust. The newer units with the larger exhaust pipe do not have the “roar’ that the older units have.

Pretty easy to do. The exhaust is ‘automotive’ exhaust pipe that any muffler shop could easily build for you. There is a short piece of 1 ½” inside diameter plumbing pipe that exits the bottom of the Aqua-Hot. Do not disturb that. Should be 1 15/16” outside diameter. I would expect a 2” inside diameter exhaust pipe would just fit over it. Muffler pipe clamp to squeeze exhaust to existing pipe and I think you will be quite happy with the results.
