Installing Stereo in Storage Bin
Hey All
I'm going to install a stereo in one of my storage bins/compartments. I'll use a piece of 3/4" oak as a base, which will also drop the stereo mount just about even with the top of the compartment. Stereo will be mounted in an underdash stereo housing.
However, on my coach (1997 Newmar Mountain Aire 3757), it looks like there is a thin piece of sheet metal with a covering at the top of the compartment. I assume there should be at least 3/4" wood flooring above that. 2" wood screws will not reach anything solid enough to mount the base, even without going through the base.
Anyone know approx how much space is generally between the compartment top and the subfloor? I don't want to get screws that are so long they go all the way through.
Thanks!

To measure that space on your Newmar drill a small hole in the ceiling material, insert a piece of clothes hanger wire into the hole, push it up until it hits the sub-floor, mark it there, pull it out and use a ruler to measure from the top end of the wire the mark.
(On my Safari it measures 1-3/4 inch... and the sub-flooring is 3/4 of an inch thick).

Thanks for the suggestion Mel, worked well! I had 2 3/4" near the outside of the compartment, but towards the back of the compartment the cavity went right up the the underside of the furnace, about 6" above.
I used 4" wood screws and thin walled tubing as a standoff for the outer mounts, and toggle bolts for the back mounts.
Has worked great the couple of weekends we've had her out since the install.

If you have a couple of pictures we can add your thread to QT's # 3 so others can follow your idea.

Ventilation should not be a problem. The compartment will be open when he uses it.
