Inverter 30 amp button breaker pops while on shore power

I have a 2008 MADP model 4523. The inverter 30 button breaker pops while on 50 amp shore power when I pull too many ac amps. During the cold months I sometimes use small heaters to supplement the hydronic heat. When I run the toaster the coffee make the microwave and the electric outlet heaters I often pop the small 30 amp button on the inverter in the cealing of the half basement compartment on the passenger side of the coach.

I thought that while on shore power I do not use the inverter but I guess that’s not true.

Has anyone put in an inverter bypass that can switch the inverter 110 fuse panel off the inverter and connect directly to shore power?

Thanks in advance

With the appliances you are running, you are well above 30A. The toaster will run 4-5 amps, the coffee maker 5-8 amps, each space heater will run 10-12 amps, the microwave 10 amps and the hydronic heat 10 amps per element. Regardless of whether you are on the inverter or straight park power, you will be popping a 30A breaker somewhere.

It is time for a little better power management program.

Even bypassing the inverter, your still only using 10 gauge wiring for the 30 amp loop from the main panel to the inverter. You will trip the inverter breaker in the main panel.

What you should do is find some outlets that don't run on that circuit and use them for the heaters.

@twinboat. That is a great suggestion. It looks as though all the 110 outlets in my coach are on the inverter accept for the hidden ones for the dishwasher and clothes washer. Maybe I should rewire some of the 110 outlets to the main panel.

I added two outlets powered from a breaker I installed in the main breaker box.

Uhhhh...if you are on a 30A circuit feeding the motorhome, you can only draw 30A before you start popping a breaker somewhere. You can totally bypass the inverter, but then the breaker in the 30A power pedestal will pop if you pull more power than it will support. Amps is amps!

It's too bad that most manufacturers, including Newmar, don't take advantage of the 2 in / 2 out potential of their Magnum inverters. Most of the Magnum inverters have the potential of 2 30A legs of pass-through power but they elect to only use one 30A leg to the sub panel. This would solve the problem. It would be little to no cost to configure them this way during manufacturing.

I’m think it may be appropriate to interject an RVGeeks video...

A lot of the loads you mentioned are all Inverter powered. Thus limited to 30A.

You can try to plug a heater into the non-Inverter outlets. On our coach...those are washer, dryer, induction cooktop, and engine block heater.

Hope that helps...

Stay warm.

I know...50A or not, a lot of our daily devices are on the Inverter sub panel. His inverter's 30a breaker is popping. It is still 30A even when plugged into 50A shore power, or even running 60A or more off the generator.

So relieving the Inverter of part of the load will help the inverter not pop it's button breaker..

If he uses outlets off the inverter sub panel...he can enjoy more of that 50A...(still limited to the value of the load distribution bus breakers)

Oopps...I see that clarification was for TJ...

He did, indeed, I missed that.

ok, now I'm confused. He's on 50A shore power, yet the 30A resetable button breaker on the inverter is popping. Isn't that the whole point of being on 50A shore power; to have (almost) no limitations on what you power up? Isn't the inverter bypassed when on shore power? There is a inverter assist function on the Magnum, but why is it working so hard if he has SOLID 50A shore power?

Run an appropriate sized extension cord from the 110vac outlet on the power pedestal into the coach to run the electric heater.
