Inverter/ac

My 2018 newmar ventana le came with a 1200 Watts inverter. If I upgrade it to a 3000 Watts inverter can I run at least 1 ac without any solar panels? If yes then for how long? before my batteries are drained? Sorry I am new to rv ownership and I don’t know much about them. I also would like info on how many watts of solar panels I would need to keep my 6 deep cycle batteries charged?

On my unit the a/c won't work unless I'm plugged into shore power or running the generator. I have a 3100 watt inverter.

You won’t be able to run your A/C on an inverter regardless of the inverter size. Too much current draw.

Figure on drawing 150 amp@12 volts DC, per running hours.

If you have 400 AH of battery, you can run it about 75 minutes before your down to 50% state of charge. That's when you would need to recharge the batteries for best service.

You probably can not carry enough batteries or have enough roof space for enough solar to do this regularly.

Your problem is battery capacity. A 3000 W Inverter will draw ~300 Amps from the battery bank. Check the size of your battery bank and figure you don't want to use more than 50% of capacity.

The rest is manageable with a bit of knowledge but more expensive than it is worth. The Wynn's mooched some heavy duty Lithiums and did a video doing a couple of hours if you are really interested and have very deep pockets. Here is there page with a video link:

You can use an 3000W inverter to power the A/C, but in your case you will have to rewire lots of things:
  • The panel to run the A/C from the inverter
  • Most likely the A/C wiring to and from the inverter to the panel (needs to be 10AWG for a 3000W inverter)
  • The DC wiring from the batteries to the inverter and potentially between the batteries for the higher power inverter (DC wiring must handle 300A as nothermark mentioned).
As stated above plan not to use more than 50% of your lead acid battery capacity. This limits the amount of time you'll be able to power the A/C, less than 1.5 hr in the example twinboat mentioned.

Also you will need a good quality 3000W inverter with high surge capability, I would use only Pure Sine wave types to run large appliances such as A/C's.

We successfully run our A/C on both the coaches in our sig below, however I designed the systems to do that. Also, like the Wynns and others I use LiFePO4 batteries. I started with about 1000AH of Lead Acid in the Newmar, but they only lasted a few years, probably because I bought cheap ones.

For solar panels, if you simply want to keep the batteries charged while stored you'll need much less than if you want to use them while dry camping. There are lots of threads on this forum and lots of guides on the internet, I'd investigate some of them to get an idea of what is possible.

It can be done, one of the options on my rig was running the front heat pump off the battery bank. They added 2 more 8D AGM batteries (6 total), another 3000 watt psw inverter and a 300 amp alternator.
I don't have thar option though, but it was available.
