Is there a workaround for broken basement door latch?

When the latch is lifted, the locking cover comes, but it does not bring the door with it. Any way to work around it for now? On the road and not convenient to find a repair place.

Closely examine a working latch. Is there a rod attached to the cover that gets pulled when the cover is lifted? If so, then with needle-nosed pliers see if you can pull on the lever in the broken latch.

If the door with the broken latch is on a pass through compartment, you might crawl from the opposite side and unscrew the latch from the back if possible, or at least pop the latch and open the door.

Mine did what yours is doing. Push in on the bay door slightly, underneath push up on the locking bar that should get it open. Take the back plate off. there is a small arm that operates the open and close mechanism held in place by a screw. See if the screw is loose.

Thanks so much for your help! Could not get the door to budge by pushing. However, we could access the back of the door through the one adjacent to it. Could not remove all the screws on the back cover plate because the bottom two screws were blocked by the frame lip and weather stripping.

HOWEVER, DH noticed he could remove the bolts that held the frame-attached bracket to which the door latches. That let him free the latch and raise the door, after which he could remove the latch and discover, YES, the screw holding the lever was indeed loose.

One of the easiest fixes possible, and one we would not have known about without your help.

I love irv2.
