Hi folks!
I posted this on the RVnet forum but thought maybe we could get additional comments here from those who might not have see it there.
Would a 30% off of MSRP on a new 2006 Newmar Kountry Star DP which has been sitting around on a dealer's lot for about 7 months be considered a good deal?
I've been thinking that it should be discounted even more for it's already a "year old" because it's last years' model. I mean, these things depreciate fast enough without the added factor of being last years' model, right?
The dealership claims they can't go any further because it's almost at their cost and they have to make "something" on the deal. I undertand that but I also worry about my purchasing something that's already a "year old."
I've read on this forum where one can get close to 28% off MSRP placing a factory order. So is it worth the additional 2% off to get a year old model that's been sitting on the dealer's lot for 7 months?
I'm tempted to buy the unit because I'd like to get something fairly quickly but if I have to, I guess I could do the factory order thing. The only problem with that is that they claim the base price is higher and if not done soon, will have the required more expensive diesel engine that is mandatory for 2007 which uses the new fuel.
Are there any other issues buying a "demo" which has been walked through and test driven for seven months?
Do you folks think 30% off MSRP is enough in this case?
Thank you!
joy

It depends.. what is the list price? How far are you from a Newmar dealer? How is there service department?
Me, I would make sure that you get a 1 year NEWMAR warranty from date of purchase. Next I would ask for an free extended warranty. You might get it for a bunch less than what they normally ask. But, be real careful of the fine print. I would look for a Exclude version versus one that is an Include one.

IMHO you're prety close to what the dealer cost is at 30% off...
Technically, while the coach has been walked through and such,it is NOT a demonstrator.
It's a decision you'll have to make....I say if you're happy with the coach and feel the deal is fair for all parties....do it.

Hi! Don't be afraid to throw an offer that is lower. Newmar gives incentives to dealers to help them move their leftover product. Paul

While I haven't had DP's my first Newmar KS was in shows and walked thru for over a year than sat on lot for another 4 months, present coach was on lot for 8 months because people could see some of the items that should have been taken care of by dealer not done. First coach had 3 yr warranty made two visits to factory and made 100%. This coach KS I have corrected most problems myself and one visit to Newmar.
A Newmar coach will stand up to alot of abuse if thats what its given so I would look over interior of coach and check out items like on a PDI check and make your judgement. As to chassis take out coach and if you can take a newer coach and compare between the to.
The price you can go to other dealer web sites and see what thay are looking for a price with a comparable coach.
Good luck with your hunt we can always use a new NEWMAR OWNER on this forum.
OH by the way welcome to irv2 and the Newmar forum.

Personally would go with the 2007 at 26-28% as the 06 has already depreciated at least 10%(especially if you are going to sell it in less than 5-6 years). If you order now you will get current 07 pricing and an 06 engine(easy to verify if you you want). You can also order want you want with the options and special changes of your choice without having to take just what is available on the dealers lot(and you may just find something on an 07 that is not available on an 06).

Of the advice given, I encourage you to consider asking for additional items that do not affect the 31% you have been offered. Asking for an extended warranty is an excellent recommendation. How about a free washer/dryer? Whatever is important to you and would close the deal.
The bottom line is that if the floor plan works for you then buy the coach and be happy.

Oh, thank you for all the responses!
Well, we did what Gary suggested and asked for a few other items and they balked but eventually gave in. So we're getting the 31% off plus what we figure is about $3,000 worth of "other" stuff.
They claim their cost is between 30 and 31% so like Paul said, they must be getting some kickback from Newmar or they wouldn't be making the deal. They also offered us a full tank of fuel and propane so you got to figure they're still making a nice profit.
We agreed but on the contingency of actually seeing and test driving it. It's not at a local dealer.
I really think what Dav5942 is saying is probably true. We really should be ordering a new one and getting exactly what we want but we have some personal reasons why we can't wait several months for one. This one has a bunch of stuff we probably wouldn't want if we were ordering and doesn't have some stuff that we want.
I think we probably are getting a good deal but not a fantastic deal on it. As we stated, we're concerned about it already being a year old but if we keep it for years and years, it may not be that huge a factor.
Oh, we're also concerned about that "lift pump" issue but I'll search this forum before I ask about that. That has us concerned but I think we read where it's under a $1,000 to have it replaced so perhaps it isn't that big a deal. Okay, more questions on that later.
Thanks again, everybody!

Joy,
You should have no problem with the lift pump with an 06 engine. The problem has occured in older engines. From what I've read, it is the change from LSD to ULSD fuel. Since you will, most likely, start using the ULSD immediately, there is no changing your fuel system from the LSD to ULSD fuel. Even if you get a few tanks of LSD there should be no problem. In my signature coach, I lose no sleep over this and when awake, no brain cycles are used thinking about it.
Congrats on your purchase. I hope you enjoy your KSDP and much as we have enjoyed ours. Some where in your documentation there is information on the Newmar Owners' Klub. It is called the Newmar Kountry Klub. It is a good organization, consider joining.
Enjoy,
