Hi All,

Has anyone changed the fuel filter on the
ISM500/Essex. I am going to change the filter
for the first time. Draining the old
filter prior to removal, so far 1/2 gal has
drained, when does it stop??

I have changed fuel filters before on ISC/ISL and only about a quart has drained before stopping.

Hi! We have the same setup as you do, just less HP. When Cummins changed ours we were parked level and quite a bit of fuel came out. The mechanic filled the new filter with fuel and started us up with no air. It is a long way from the filter to the tank. Paul

I'm not sure you can stop it all.

You need a pan underneath to catch the mess.

Also my original filter was on so tight, it took a heavy duty filter wrench and a very strong friend to get it loose.

Cummins does NOT recommend filling filters before installing them, because they want no unfiltered fuel in the engine.

I put mine on dry, but most mechanics do fill them.

Filling the secondary filter is the most risky, as it does the final filtering, and has the finest filtration.

When you fill a filter, you pour the unfiltered fuel in the center large hole, and that large hole is the output of the filter.

Cummins does recommend you fill filters on some models.

The ISM filter must be filled before installation. Get fresh fuel and make sure you fill it to the top. Pull off the old filter and put on the new one ASAP...don't let the fuel drain out. The ISM does not prime itself as well as the other Cummins engines. Getting too much air in the line is a real problem.

Its not that they recommend the practice per se but that since the ISM does not have a priming pump the filter must be filled.
