It was just a matter of time
I knew I would eventually do it and today I did. I forgot to put down the Winegard crank antenna and off I went down the road. Well, needless to say, I never made it far until I realized it was still up. The dead giveaway was leaves, branches, and pieces of white plastic flying down from the sky when I drove under a tree limb that I have driven under many times before with no problems. What can I say? Anyway, I was curious. Should I just go back with the same kind of antenna or is there something else on the market now that would be better. Preferably one that will send an electrical shock to the drivers seat when I put the RV in drive with the antenna still up.

On my last MH I installed the Jack on the posts. Worked great and was easy to install. I also made the same mistake on our trip and was lucky to remember about 20 minutes down the road.

For over 30 years we use a laminated antenna sign, it clips to the antenna handle with a clothes pine when down and clips to steering wheel or gear shift leaver when the antenna is up. This has never failed us.

You are the first RVer to ever do that!
Personally, I would just replace it. I had an omni-directional years ago and it sucked in fringe areas. Perhaps they are better now?
I did replace my batwing with a Jack last year. It works great, but still works much better to pull in fringe stations when you can direct it. I guess it depends where you will be camping and the proximity to broadcast antennas you will be.

I wrap my cb mic cord around the gear shift lever and my DW does a thorough walk around and visual roof inspection before we leave.

We have one of the Winegard Roadstar Omni Hd Antennas GaryKD mentioned. It replaced the old bat wing. We pick up more Tv channels via air now than ever and don't have to worry about forgetting to crank it down. A little tip if you install one, we placed a battery operated smoke detector over the holes where the old bat wing was. Looks great! I highly recommend it!

I bought a blank (uncut) ignition key and hung one of those "Do Not Drive, Antenna Up" signs you can get at CW on it. When I put my antenna up, I put it in the ignition. Pretty failsafe.

That's what I do too. Sure does remind you to take it down before moving!

Years ago9 the Ins. co. I worked for had an ice scraper 4" wide with a clip for the sunvisor. I kept 1 for my antenna. It says stop on one side and that goes on t he steering wheel when parked. It stays onthe antenna crank when travelling. This is the 3rd. MH I have used it on.

I would suggest you do a complete pre trip inspection before you start out daily that means open hood look under and all around mh before you even start it, could save you a lot of headaches down the road, sorry a habit I have kept for years old truckers die hard

I wouldn't loose any sleep over this. Chalk it up to experience. I have to believe Wingard sells a lot of replacement bat wings for just this reason. I have only had batwings, and was surprised how they have improved over the years. If it where me, I would replace with a new batwing.

We bought our first Class A at an estate auction. No dealer walk through with all the hints and reminders. On our first trip from home we made it to the center of our small town (about 2 miles away) and the Police Dept was out in force (both of them). One in a car in the on-coming lane with all lights blazing and the other officer standing in my lane waving me over . We had no clue as to why. Seat belts buckled. . . Seems anther unit had seen my antenna up and called it in. Talk about embarassed . I now have a checksheet that I carry in my hand around the RV before I get in the drivers seat. It is also a standing joke with my wife when we get ready to go.
