the last 2 buttons on the right have quit working...is the pad fixable? or if I get a new one and upgrade to a better quality, will I need to redo the entire system of locks to make it work? What $$$ am I looking at..I understand the original pad was crummy at best...

I don't think they are all that bad. Usually, if water gets in, they are toast. If you are off warranty, order one (I don't know the cost) and you can install it easily yourself. It is a plug and play basically.

We had increasing trouble with ours. You would have to do the code 3 times to get an unlock. Sometimes no response from one or more buttons. We stopped at Newmar for just an overnight on our way south and called tech support. Explained the problem and they actually sent someone out to the coach right then.

This guy was great and was very knowledgable on the keyless entry. He said our only option was to replace the keypad as there was no fixing it once it began acting that way. He walked Don back to parts and they were closed that afternoon so he took him back into the "back" and got a new keypad. It was a choaker...about $325. He gave Don good instructions on what to do to get it in. That included filing out the fiberglass opening a little since the new one had a slightly larger size for the opening. I'm talking 1/32 of an inch.

He installed it right there in the Newmar parking lot. It took Don an hour and a half and that included the pause time to work up the nerve to start. New one works perfectly....better than the original and looks just like it was original.

Good luck with yours.

$325...OW..
Maybe I can get one from a non Newmar source and avoid a little heavy markup. I think Essex Electronics makes it

Hi Larry! Essex does make it. Maybe you can call them and see if the 1700 Series pad will work. I had asked Newmar numerous times why they never used the next model up. Never got a straight answer. Paul

Paul...I noticed the dimensional differences..the better one is one inch taller and over 2 inches wider...will need some fiberglass cutting even IF it will work....not a nice thought of screwing up the surrounding paint...will chek it out tho

Hi! Sorry, I did not see that. I don't think the hole is as big as the keypad?? Paul

I have had the same problem. My third keypad just began to fail. I tried to get Newmar to let me upgrade to the 1700 series (at my cost) under the last warranty replacement but they said no. So I let them send me a 1600 which Essex Company said was better sealed than the early ones. Now I am installing a 1700 series. They are an exact replacement (connection-wise). I understand that I will have to enlarge the hole, but I can do that. Have friends with the 1701 and it is a much better unit and hasn't failed for them as of yet. Hope this solves the problem.

Hi Joe
I spoke with Essex Electronics and there is a 3 yr warranty from date of mfg, not installation or delivery, so that is a moot point and they said the newer pads have a 'better' epoxy that keeps all the layers together better...for a switch that is rated at a 'billion' cycles if I remember correctly, they are falling slightly short of that! If the 1700 series is better I might go that way IF all the connections remain the same..

Larry,

We haven't had our new one long enough to know if true (maybe 3 months), but the Newmar tech told Don that the new keypad was much better than the old one, as it was better sealed from the elements. He said they had not had nearly as many problems with the newer one. Just more info for you to mull.

When this Essex keypad fails, have you guys also found the remotes no longer work? I have neither the keypad nor the remotes working...wondering if this is symptomatic of the same problem or could there be something else wrong?

WELL, my keypad (second one) was working great until this subject hit the forum...now #3 has decided to stop working. The keypad was installed about 14 months ago.
How does one know who the manufacturer is to see if the warranty applies?

Ronnie

Ronnie, I believe you have an Essex brand system. They have some good info on their website on two different models...1701 and 1704. Google "Essex Electronics Inc."
