Kitchen Slide Issues Since First Trip May Be Solved

My kitchen slide issues that I have been having since the very first trip in my motorhome may have been solved today. I have posted several threads about the slide not opening and the last one about it making loud bangs while closing it. Of course the warranty is out, but I plan on pressing Newmar anyway.

The RV mobile tech first reset the control board that I may have messed up at one of my stops when the slide would not work. But the slide again would only work part way. The front motor would stop and the rear motor would keep going. The slide would also not work correctly when the slide is coming in. The rear motor would keep moving the slide, but the front would stop. This was getting the slide out of wrack which was making the loud bangs.

I did find out I have two individual motors with no trantouque bushing and shaft between them. After making a second call to Newmar the tech worked on eliminating possible causes of the problem with the front motor. He swapped the wires on the controller and it still worked wrong. He then removed the brake and it still would not work right. He then removed the motor and took it apart. The big gear was missing several teeth and when the smaller gear got to that point it stopped working. By taking the slide in the opposite direction it would bypass or jump pass the missing teeth. I was also able to push on the slide and the gears would work again.

The tech will be getting with Newmar to see how to get this resolved. I would like to know a contact with Newmar to try to recoup some of the $$$ I am spending to get this fixed. I have had to call Newmar several times on every trip I have taken including the first one and first stop.

After doing some research I am hoping the tech can replace the broken gear. I found prices from $400 and up. Even better I hope he can convince Newmar to furnish a new motor.

I've had 2 motor/gearbox failures where the teeth are broken off as you describe. First one was a couple weeks past warranty and I convinced Newmar to cover it. THe last one was covered by my extended service plan. Figure on $1k for a motor/gearbox assembly. I don't think you can get parts like the gerars etc. without going to a machine shop to fab them.

No matter the outcome, the problem has hopefully been resolved and you can start relaxing when you operate that slide.

Would you happen to remember who you contacted?

scroll down to "resolving disputes" and read the paragraph regarding problems reported but not fixed during the warranty period.

I got the cost of a new motor today and it was $1,200 plus taxes. I am in the process of sending Newmar an email concerning this. The email will have pictures also of the gears.

Would the customer service email be the one to send it to?
