We just had to have the step cover motor replaced for the second time (making 3 motors so far). While these have been covered under warrantee, it still is a nusiance having to go the service center etc etc etc.

Anyone else having these motors fail or am I doing something wrong?

I had one go on my Dutch Star two years ago and dealer is currently waiting for the parts to fix the step cover on my current MADP. Will be fixed under warranty but still a hassle.

I had read about the step cover problem, so that was one of the first things I checked during the PDI. It didn't work and they replaced it. About 6 months later it broke again and I had it replaced.
I have also read where keeping your finger on the activation switch a little too long after the step has cycled may cause the failure. Now I am extra careful to remove pressure from the switch as soon as the cover has completed the cycle.
This is a well known problem so I don't know why Newmar replaces a faulty step cover motor design with the same piece of junk.

Mine failed the third time I used it. The prior owners had carpet pieces on the steps and it jammed. I broke the back off the motor when I pulled the step up to get to the motor. Newmar shipped me a new one right away and I replace it myself. Easy to do and easier than driving 160 miles to the nearest dealer.

Bruce - I never could figure out how to raise the steps to get at the motor when it died. I tried pulling up on the middle riser and it moved some, but was very hard and I was afraid I'd break something.

How did you get the cover up?

My step cover actuator (motor) broke last year and I had it replaced. The bigest problam is that the threaded holes for the screws holding the motor together, are way too close to the outside of the motor part. It just falls apart. there needs to be a limit switch on it or it will probable happen again. I may just put my own on and be done with it , but not till the warrenty is over. Very poor design from vendor. When mine was replaced the tech. just pulled the step out and it stayed up and he replaced the actuator if just a few minutes. I don't care for the quality of that part but that is what it calls for, so until they get something better will stay with it.
