Good afternoon all,

We are about to take delivery of our 05 MADP 4303. I have been
monitoring a couple of other forums for a while, learning all I can
about some of the systems that are used by Newmar. My question
relates to the KVH L-3 In-motioin sat system.

Our other coaches have had the KVH system, but they were stationary
semi-automatic S-2 models. A connection to the low speed data
port was not required in order to use Direct TV, since the method of
acquistion was not automatic or continuous.

My question is two-fold:

1. Do you need a connection to the low speed data port? I will be
using an RCA IRD that is normally used in my home.

2. If you do in fact need the LSDP connection, does the cable come
with the L-3 unit from the factory or do I need to order it
separately from KVH? It does not appear the other manufacturers
include them.

Your assistance is appreciated.

I have my factory installed L3 on a 2004 discovery right now. You do not need a low or high speed data port connection. The L3 comes programmed to track Direct TV as a standard. If you want to change the satellite that you want the L3 to track, then you need a serial cord between a laptop running hyper terminal and the serial port beside the remote on / off switch of the L3. Good Luck with your ne motorhome, sounds exciting.

By the way, where is home for you. The L3 has issues with dew. I live north of seattle and in the fall and winter months, the L3 will get a very low siginal after midnight until noon the next day when the condinsation dries up in the sun.

KVH has a web site with a tech telephone number if you have any other issues.

Be patient with your L3, its the best on the market but its not perfect, especially tracking in heavy rains.

We have an 05 DSDP 4009. We had difficulity with our L-3 finding a signal until we purchased a newer RCA receiver with a LSDP at Best Buy for $50. It works great now.

I have the KingDome in-motion dome on my Bus but previously I installed a KVH L-3 myself on my Suncruiser.

As stated, the low speed connection is just for setup and diagnostics. The L3 is set up at the factory for DirecTV so you shouldn't have to change it. I did have to use mine for diagnostics once when I couldn't get it to work but otherwise you won't need the cable. My L3 did come with a serial cable to connect to a laptop but Newmar may or may not include it on a factory setup. It's a 9 pin null modem cable that you can get at any computer store should you need it but chances are you never will.

As to rain fade, that's any issue with any dome. Many simply put RainX on the dome and that helps. The secret is to get the drops to slide off the dome. Some owners wax them, some use RainX. Kingdome now offers a special spray (expensive) to put on their domes. Their sales department doesn't recommend RainX, only their product (go figure ) but the service techs have been recommenbding RainX for years.

The L3 is a nice system. The Kingdome is quieter but the L3 is just as good in the signal quality area and once it locks on it's nice and stable. Plus, it can be used as a DirctWay Internet receiver later on if you go that way.
