I'm getting ready to leave for my first trip in my Mountain Aire, and am trying to understand as much as possible before I leave next week. I got a less than stellar delivery from the dealer, the answer I heard to most of my questions was to "read the instruction manual". Unfortunately there is no Newmar owners manual present, and I doubt I can get one before I leave. So, I will need to ask a few ignorant questions over the next several days.

My first one is about a switch in the electrical center above the drivers seat. A switch next to the switch for the electric steps says "LP". I assume that this turns the gas on and off? Is up on and down off, how does that work? I always run the refrigerator on gas anytime the generator isn't running, so I definitely need to get this one sorted out.

Now, for the water filter, I went to remove the filter housing to make sure that there was a filter in there and to see what filter it was so I could grab a spare or two from either Home Depot or Lowe's. Lo & behold, there was no wrench to remove the filter housing. I will have to contact the dealer to get that, but does anyone know what is the best replacement filter fits it?

TIA

John

The LP switch just turns power on and off to the LP detector. The only time you would turn it off is when you would store the rig for long period of time to keep from running the batteries down.

You may be able to to get a wrench from Home Depot or Lowe's if the filter is a large home type filter.

I use a basic sediment filter, as a too restrictive filter will reduce water pressure.

Hi John,

I believe the switch you are talking about turns the LP Detector on and off.

Probably you had the same guy I had.....He told my wife he thought there was a button on the micro-wave that makes Popcorn, but he wasn't sure......

Not sure what filter you have, I suggest the look and see.

Congrats on the MH though and after a year or so you can forget the treatment at Dealership

John As Dirk has said the LP Switch is to turn the Gas Detector on or off. The only time you would turn it off is when coach is in storage,

If you have a big pair of water pump pliers you could use them to get the filter housing off until you get to Home Depot or Lowes to get a wrench. Likely about a 10" filter.

The water filter wrench might be in your case of manuals - I assume you did get a case of instruction/pamphlet stuff? That wrench is often packaged with the filter manual. I'll PM you with a link to the 07 EX manual, much of it will apply to your MA and will at least get you some reference material.

You'll know the filter element is installed if the water tank fills at a 1 gal/min rate or so. The stock filter is amazingly restrictive.

You might just be able to spin it off w/o the wrench if you can get a good grip on it - maybe use one of those rubber jar opener pads too. A basic strap wrench will work as well if you have one of those.

I rummaged around in the garage and was able to find one of my rubber strap wrenches, I finally got the filter apart. I'll try to match it up tomorrow.

On the LP detector switch, which way is on, up or down? When I first noticed it the switch was down, so I don't know if that is on or off. Most of these systems the gas doesn't work if the detector is off, so I need to figure this out. Is there a light on the detector that would show me if it was on? Where is the detector?

LP switch - turn it one way and look at the detector to see which way turns it off. In my coach pushing the switch upwards (depressing the top half of the rocker) turns it on.

When you have the LP detector on you will see a green flashing light every few seconds and you can push the button on it and it will sound off.

LP detector is mounted low (LP is heavier than air). My EX has it by the main door on the wall a couple inches up from the floor.

Thanks Jeff, that's exactly where it was, behind the passenger seat flush with the wall. I had looked back there but didn't see it until I looked harder.
The switch turned up is in the on position as you said yours is too. Also yes, I did get the big folder full of manuals and such. The wrench wasn't in there, and I am sure that several of the manuals aren't there either. I know for sure the Newmar manual isn't there, but I do have the big binder with the Spartan manuals.

Obviously the dealership did a great pre-delivery inspection of it too. I found the porch light didn't work, the bulb looked like it had been shattered for a while.

Thanks for the help. I'm sure more questions will follow. It's pretty sad when the people who make money from selling and servicing these things know nothing about them and we have to resort to asking questions here. Luckily this forum exists!
