Lights and Wipers

When I hit the intermittent wiper switch, the LBCU display switches to "night" mode and the GPS dims for night mode, even though it's daylight. THis makes both displays difficult to read in the bright light. I assume that the wipers are turning on the headlights. I haven't been able to get them back to normal daylight brightness except by stopping and shutting off the engine, then restarting. Any ideas ?

That’s the way it works. Nothing is wrong. You can adjust display brightness in the LBCU settings.

It may be the way it works, but not the way I would like it to work ! I wonder if there is a
ECU software change available--- I'll see what Freightliner has to say.

The lights will stay on even after you turn the wipers off. You have to cycle the light switch to on then back to off to turn the lights off.
That's normal according to the Freightliner tech that I asked.

Incorrect. Once the wipers come on the lights will remain on until the engine is turned off.

Sorry. It works the way I said on my Discovery. I guess Newmar is different.

It's actually Freightliner. The lights are the running lights on the top/side that I'm talking about. If you use the wipers it turns those on and remains on. I think if you turn on your headlights first, the LBCU goes dark, then use the wipers, then if you turn the headlights off the LBCU will go back to daytime mode.

Moral is - yeah, it's strange and if you get stuck in night mode it is hard to read the LBCU unless you set the brightness higher.

Safety thing by FL to keep running lights on if you deemed the need to use the wipers, well, I wanted to just wash my windshield and the lights stayed on. I thought it was a problem at first and sure enough I emailed FL to inquire, but it IS in the manual had I ehemm read it

I don't mean to be argumentative but I know what my 2017 Discovery does and it's on a Freightliner XCM chassis.
I originally thought it was a problem so I called Freightliner.
I can see the running lights in the mirror. When I cycle the light switch after the wipers are turned off they go out.
Sorry to invade the Newmar forum. I'll go away now.

I may be wrong, will have to check again next time. It is confusing. I hope you're right, it could also have been a newer software update so it may have changed and I hadn't paid attention.

Long story short - I don't remember!! :( I thought they stayed on and the LBCU stayed in night mode if wipers when on with headlight switch off. Have to tinker and find out.

John:

All are welcome on the Newmar Owners Forum, so don't run off.

That being said, how something works on another brand of motorcoach frequently doesn't help a Newmar owner figure out how something works on their coach. Even though coaches may be on the same brand chassis, the implementation of various things on a given chassis may be different due to the coach builder's specifications.

The point here is that you may well be correct for the Discovery but Newmar may have spec'd a different implementation. And, implementations change with model years and/or levels too.

All this to say that information is useful in context but not always useful across the board.

I have tried cycling the lights-- makes no difference. The only way to get them off, that I've found, is to shut down.
The LBCU is not much of an issue as it's right in front of me, I display Oil PSI,Tranny Temp and Engine Temp..... what is a pain is the GPS which is over to the side and with it dimmed, it's really had to read the details in bright light

On mine if I put the wipers on the running lights will come on also, if I cycle the light switch on and off they will go off. At least that's the way mine worked the last time I used the wipers.

Mine works the same. Wipers on lights go on. After turning wipers off, cycle headlights switch on/of lights go off.

I'll watch for this next time, I think the main point of concern here is the Light Bar. Maybe they reprogrammed it and it changed for the better.

However, for those that test this, look out your mirror and I think your running lights will remain on until engine off.
