Locking Diesel Fuel Caps?

Has anyone tracked down what locking diesel fuel caps might work on recent model DSDPs? Anything is better than nothing, but ideally it would be a style that could be keyed to an existing chassis key (easy to do for automobiles). Thanks!

Locking Diesel Fuel Caps

There is an older thread.

These just have a little key...not programmable to the ignition key.

I did notice the other day the ignition key to our coach and our Jeep use the same blank. So, you could program the aftermarket hitch lock keyed for a Jeep...to fit your Coaches ignition key. Interesting...l

We ordered two of them from Ryder...and they're keyed alike.

I ordered a set mentioned in the thread quoted by C. Martin. They are keyed alike but NOT possible to use ignition key - much smaller key.

Stant brand also makes two fuel caps keyed alike. Fuel caps are pretty much standard sizes. Take your fuel cap into NAPA or any auto parts store.

It is not only the size, it must be determined if it is vented or not. Most are not vented on the Newmars. The quickest way to check, albeit a little weird, is place you mouth to cover the inside of the cap and suck. Well, the procedure sure sucks but it works!

You may need a drink after that one!

I much prefer to look for the decal , that says open cap slowly , to indicate it's a non vented cap. If you just pulled off the highway and it hisses when you crack it loose , it's non-vented.

Using good booze to try and wash down diesel .

I just have to ask...why do you guys feel you need locking diesel fuel tank caps? Have you experienced someone stealing your fuel or worse, contaminating it? Last thing I want is more keys to fumble with.

Just an all perils insurance policy. No actual experience that I know about, but now that you mention it, I always seem to get lower fuel mileage than everyone else. Do you suppose...

Hi rewillia,
For me it is the potential contamination/vandalism. The fuel key is next to the ignition key on the key ring.

As to the need for locking fuel caps .
I would say , it depends where your coach is parked, and how , when and where you use it .
I'm in my coach in an RV park; where I've know my neighbors for years; for 5 1/2 months every winter ; when not in use the coach is in my back ( fenced ) yard.
Locking fuel doors, is enough for me.
Recent TV news stories about fuel thieves just drilling holes in tanks ; not much defense against that.

Just a step to prevent potential vandalism. I’m from the school of “If you make it even a slight inconvenience, most bad-doers will move on to an easier target”.

Guess I'm of the "other thinking", and keep a 9MM close by in case "other, unwanted guests" appear to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. I too store my coach in a secured location when not in use (enclosed building) and tend to stay in well maintained populated RV parks when touring so my perceived risk may be less than that of others.

I certainly feel that there is nothing wrong with being pro-active in all measures of security including a locking gas cap for those that choose to use them. [applause].

I have an ID badge holder with a key ring on it. It keeps my Flying J Plus card, locking fuel cap key, and the key to the padlock I keep on my brake Guard when the coach is stored.

None of it is to prevent a crime. It's to help guide mischievous children away from making bad choices. Kinda like putting a fence around your pool to prevent a child from gaining access, unsupervised...and drowning.

Any adult willing to commit a crime won't be stopped by these gadgets...

9mm only works when you feel you are in fear of losing your life or sustaining grievous bodily harm,,,to yourself, or another. Fuel caps don't get close...

Just my $.02
