Looking at 2005-2010 Newmars

I am looking at getting a replacement coach. Something in the 2005 - 2010 time frame. Thinking an Essex. Anything to be on the look out with this model made during those years?

Thanks

Carl

In general and other than paying for a certified inspection I would more closely look at rust on the mounts of the basement storage brackets and look over the mounting bolts of all the slide gear boxes watching for cracks and loose bolts.

We looked at several used Essex coaches in that year group. They are a well build coach on a K2 Spartan chassis with a Cummins ISM 500hp engine.
There are some things to watch out for.
The early years had fiberglass delamination.
Paint checking in the darker colors.
Newmar used an Eplex multiplex electronic control system in some years that was troublesome.
Several owners complained about the new european style mirrors that hang from above.
Only the 45' floor plans have three AC units.
Some owners stated they had expensive EGR issues with the ISM.

When we were looking the coaches either had 100k plus miles and/or were priced very high.

Our previous MH was not a Newmar. It was a 2008 model , which we bought used in 2013, built by another manufacturer but still had the 6.7L Cummins diesel. It seems that the first generation diesel emissions controls were not well designed. We had multiple issues with the EGR valve and VGT turbo. Even though the unit was used primarily at highway speeds and idled very little, those components would get clogged with soot. After 6 shop repairs in 4 years, we traded the 2008 in on our 2017 Ventana LE. Good luck with your search.

I have an ‘07 Mountain Aire which is very similar to the Essex. Same power train, Cummins 10.8L ISM, Allison 4060 transmission. The engine and transmission are highly regarded. There have been some EGR issues on some coaches. I installed an EGR bypass to make sure that I don’t have a problem in the future.

My buddy has his 2009 King Aire on consignment at North Trail RV in Ft. Myers, FL. Quite a long way for you, but it runs like a beast and may be worth the trip to a warmer climate

Good luck in your search.

That range has lots of variations among the years but they all look similar. Depending on the actual year, you may need a bunch of upgrades due to obsolete "stuff" (GPS, back-up camera, TVs, etc). Also, the rooftop A/Cs and all awnings are probably "iffy" at 10 years. Don't let any of that be a deal breaker ... just allow some money to resolve some issues. Really happy with our 2005 Essex ... wouldn't consider spending more money on a new one.

A very knowledgable Newmar person also recommended the Travel Supreme Select as comparable to the Essex. It is built on the same K2 Spartan chassis with the same ISM engine. They are very well built all electric coaches with granite counter tops, fireplaces, and many high end amenities.

Agreed, they were solid!

A plus, is the ISM, with the problems some are having with the ISX (especially 600 and 650, but a few 500hp) dropping a valve in #6 cylinder.......it gives me pause.
Not trying to muddy your waters, but Cummins does have an issue there.
If you run on to a coach with a CAT 525hp you got it made I think.
I dunno, it looks like the jury is still out about the ISX. Speaking for myself, I'm a little spooked about it I have to say.

We have discussed the ISX issue. If you purchase a used coach with the 650 HP ISX you need to either purchase an extended warranty or budget $25k for the engine upgrade.
You may be able to cut $10k off the cost if you go to a private shop and specify the parts in the tech bulletin. It also helps to join the Cummins Power Club as they give you 10% off on parts.
