How do you secure the hot water heater door so it doesn't "fly away" again as I go down the road. .

Are you referring to the hinged drop-down door on the WH or the smaller mesh snap-in grille covering the exhaust opening? I did lose the grille somehow and I still don't know how that can come out.........I suspect someone "borrowed" it.

A couple of years ago someone posted his solution (after paying around $500 for painting the door ). He drilled two holes in the top corners and screwed it in. He posted a picture, it looked pretty good.

Where did you get a replacement? Mine has either been "borrowed" or otherwise flown off also.

Local dealer had one in stock. Don't know if CW carries them or not.

Go to Hot Water Heater Cover Screwed Into Coach - iRV2.com RV Photo Gallery and see what I did. My HWH door is screwed into the bracket that holds the twist latch. The doors are a standard size. Getting it painted to match our coach is priceless (like a valuable asset it really costs a log).

Some how the twist latch became open [was closed during pre-check] and just flew away some where in PA on I-80. At Newmar rally told Ed Skibinski what happen, he told me of Boyer RV in Erie, PA couple of miles from rally.
Dealer had 3 different size doors. Had to buy frame and door. Total cost less than $60.00.
Gary the screw will be done before lunch.
Thanks every one.

I keep a cheapie carabiner that I picked up at DollarTree clipped in the spring loaded twist latch of our Atwood. I keep a few on hand in case someone "borrows" it because they deseparetly need it (hey, I have had the cheapie DollarTree bungie cords stolen off my rooftop cargo carrier when I've parked at Lowes & Home Depot... some folks will take anything). Before we leave after parking (for whatever length of time) we do a walk around to look at things (tires, open hatches, anything left out or open, make sure things are still securely attached).

Cheap easy solution is to run a tie wrap through the loop on the twist latch, cut of the excess, this will not allow the twist latch to feed through the slot in the cover. You will have to clip off the tie wrap in order to remove the cover, but only takes a second, tie wraps are cheap, also should be able to find a color that will be almost un-noticeable.

I can't imagine how the spring-loaded clip can turn to allow the door to open anyway .............. but obviously it can as evidenced by read and learn's experience. The screw idea is neat if you don't access the WH often.

I do not believe the spring loaded clip with the ring turns and releases the door. It breaks. Check it out closely. The old ones were metal and mine, as I think all newer ones are, is plastic. It is not a matter of "IF" it is going to break, but "when". Put the stainless steel screw just above the ring and you will keep the door.
