Hi ftc8002,
Go here for the information on travel to Mexico and most importantly, returning to the USA.

The requirement for a passport at a land crossing has been extended to June 2009. http://travel.state.gov/travel/cbpmc/cbpmc_2223.html

I got a passport a couple of years ago when I went on a cruise and although it was not required, everyone around me also had one and it seemed to streemline the process. Very fast customs check.

Since we're thinking about going to Alaska this next summer, we just applied for a U.S. Passport Card.

The Passport Card is a lot less expensive than a "regular" passport ($45 vs $100), but it is good only for land and sea entry from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Bermuda. The card may not be used to travel by air.

These restrictions weren't of concern to us since we don't travel by air and don't plan on going to any country other than Canada.

We just received our passport cards this week. We have the regular passport also. When we applied for the card we were told it would be 8 to 10 weeks before we would get them. Ten days later they showed up in the mail. Pretty fast for the government I think....lol

I'm also thinking about going to mexico this winter, and I figured I'd just go ahead and get a passport.

It was quicker and easier than I expected, and although it might not be required for mexico yet, I figured it was a good thing to have anyway...

We got our passports recently and were told it would be about 6 weeks. I took about 3 weeks. I would definately have one for Mexico. My wife recently was taking a photo of the boarder crossing in Brownsville, TX and a boarder patrol ran up and demanded we delete the photo which I thought was a little strange. I used to be a big proponant of the boarder fence, but now think it would be very hard to do and many businesses along the river in that area actually hang out over the river and I think billions of dollars of land would have to be seized. Might be worth it though.

Currently, a passport is not required to get back INTO the U.S. until June 1, 2009, via land or sea entry points...it is already required if you are entering the U.S. via air.

Since the land/sea passport requirements have been constantly extended, I wouldn't carve the June 1, 2009 date in stone just yet; however, if you're planning on going to either Canada or Mexico you might as well get one because, sooner or later, it WILL be required.
