Model number designation explanation

Hello,

Still researching the perfect purchase for me, and it would be a little tighter if I knew the model number designations better.

For example, can anyone explain the number designations for a 38' 1998 Dutch Star? I see 3857, 3858, 3860, 3865, 3866, 3883 on NADA's site, but it also says "all floor plans", as if each individual number has multiple floor plans. So the last two numbers don't identify floor plans. I understand the first two number, the length, but what do the last two numbers identify?

Thanks

Hi 275hooah,
The first two numbers are the length of the coach. The last two numbers are the floor plan. There are also variations of the floor plan and they are no identified in the numbering scheme. Your best choice to understand what you are looking for is to go to the Newmar Brochure archive. There you can look up the year, model and see the different floor plans. An example is the 1998 DS mentioned in your post. Go to Newmar Brochure Archive | Custom Motor Home Models to see the floor plans and specs of the models in your post.

Floor plans

Great GaryKD, thanks for the answer.

So the last two numbers DO represent the floor plan. I'll look at each model number, then figure out where the differences are, then make note.

Thanks again.

In our 2000 DSDP 3865 we had a chest on chest unit substituted for a full length closet.
We ordered a 2002 4090. BUT we had two walls, a pocket door and a regular door removed and vanity from another model substituted. In 2004 Newmar offered that plan as standard.
These were the main changes but there were lots of other changes made too.

Gary.... When I go there, the site will not present any Dutch Star brochures for 2002. Do you know what this means?

It looks like Newmar hasn't uploaded the 2002 DSDP brochure.

Hi JFXG,
Yep, you are correct. I looked through all the 02 brochures. Could not find the DS. I guess they may have lost the copy and it is forever gone.

Think i get it

OK, Then there are large differences in the same year models, like kitchen on the slide or not, the bathroom arrangement and cabinets here and there, but after that, it's pretty much whatever i find on the motorhome i find.

The small things don't bother me so much as the larger differences anyway. I like the table and sofa on the slide and the longer bed with more closets. After that, i can live with the small stuff.

With my budget, and preferences, the Newmar Dutch Star 3858 looks just about right. 38' is a good length/wheelbase ratio and the 58 floor plan is nice. The standard engine/chassis combination for that year was just the opposite from what i'd like, but there are some Cummin's/Freightliner combo's around, and I'm not in a REAL hurry, yet.

Thanks all!

My Bad!

Well, after trying to find the Cummin's/Freightliner combo in a 1998-2000 Newmar, i have come up short. Really thought i had seen a few. I WILL consider the Spartan chassis, as it is getting very good reviews, will allow me to get the interior i like and will make this whole buying thing a lot easier.

Thanks again

I don't think you could even get a FL chassis with a Cummins from Newmar during those years. I know you couldn't in 2000. It was the optional Spartan/Cummins or standard (and about $5000 cheaper) FL with CAT.
