Most people have been happy with the Five Star Tuner. GM 8.1L Archives - 5 Star Tuning
Any tuner that gives you more power is always a plus to me. Typically, better performance will often translate to a small mpg increase if you keep your foot out of it.

The best suggestion I have heard for increasing gas mileage is to park longer and drive less: that of course really just decreases the out of pocket, doesn't increase the gas mileage, but, I suppose that is what it is all about at the end of the day.
I really like the mileage squeezing combination of a Heavy Duty RV diesel Semi-Truck, like a Volvo 730, combined with a smart car on a rack, and a 5th wheel...not sure my wife will go for it...but if I was going for a full time rig, that would be high on my list. And you can pull what you want and haul what you want.

I always get nervous when changes are made to the programming that I don't understand. On my Corvette, which is modified, my tuner is careful on the fuel mixture not controlled by the O2 sensor feedback. Many of these programs will lean the mixture and throw in some advance but unless you understand what's exactly being done, I think you put the motor at risk. I would rather have a bit less mileage.

Have you looked at the Banks website for your engine? They have a very good reputation for supplying a fully engineered product and not just a slick add-on.

And there's the "problem" with them!! My foot is too heavy.

I have the Ultra Power upgrade on my 8.1 and have about 50,000 miles of data. It gave me about a .5 MPG increase initially had it installed. I have found that I use the increased HP which tends to overrides the MPG increase.

I do software so I think in digital. I don't have a heavy foot. To me, the throttle is always just 'on' or 'off'.

Don, I used the Brazel's reprogramed ECM and their CAI plus new Taylor wires and changed gap spark plugs to .045.
Increased power and gas mileage with good results.

What is you average mpg over those 50,000 miles?
I've logged every gallon of gas and overall average for 70,000 miles is 7.1 mpg. Mine is stock.

As an ex-IT manager I can see that! But I hate binary numbers!!
Took my first computer class in 1965-1966, then ended up as a Transportation Engineer. Started taking night classes to get my IT degree and then went into the IT field.

mileage
Let me second Brazzles. Unbelievable increase in POWER!! Almost 20% increase in gas mileage. Wouldn't do the muffler again but the chip is the bomb. I now drive 70 and get better mileage than I did at 65. Had a 600 cat now it dinos 700hp. Not cheap but I would do it again.
Just my two cents worth
safe travels
