or so... :-) ... after I added a few pounds worth of glass tile. I had started thinking about this project when I read another thread where somebody had used metal tiles to enhance the kitchen back-splash. I found these mosaic glass tiles at Home Depot for about $5.00 per sheet and bought 20 to do 2 sink areas. They also sell a new product which is essentially a heavy-duty sticky paper. Fit to size, apply to the wall and add the tile. Done. Almost. Grout still needs to be applied. Just like any other project, it took twice as long. That is to say, I spent the entire Sunday doing this and have 1 sink to go. See pictures here:

As always, comments, suggestions and criticism greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Ronald

The sticky paper is being sold at Home Depot and is made by Simple Mat (www.simplemat.com)
There are 10 sheets of 9 x 18 inches per package. And sticky it is! Get your fingers onto the back side and you have to pull really hard!
The top and bottom black border pieces are black granite sold for $5.00 per 12 inch stick.

Yep, may have to take out the mirrors around the stove and redo ours as the DW saw what the new King Aire, Essex, MADP, DSDP and the Ventana now use. Gotta finish the TV upgrade first though.
I think the OP's tile may be a little much for us though, but there's LOTS of different tile out there and it is cheaper than buying a new Essex!
We looked at the King Aire's and Essex's and decided they're a little too fancy for our needs and wants.

That looks really nice. I'm hoping to update my old coach, I think something like that would look very nice. What did you use to cut the tile/granite to fit it to the space?

I used a tile nipper and a tile saw

I have a "left-over" water-cooled tile saw from some home tiling projects done many years ago. It came in handy for cutting the granite sticks. If you do not have one, you can rent them for short money for a day. For the mosaic glass tiles that needed fitting (and there were a lot), I used a tile nipper. Home Depot has one for about $15.00 which is labeled for use with glass tiles. It is easy to use but you will also waste many pieces because the glass does not always break where you want it, so you keep doing it over a few times. That is nothing unusual, In fact, it is to be expected with any kind of tile work. As for the time I spent on this project, I started at about 9:00am and was done tiling by 8:00pm. I do still have to do the grout bit and expect this to take an additional 1-2 hours. So that is the overall time to do 1 sink area. I have one to go.

The back splash looks beautiful. What type of grout will you use? We have our lower floor tiled (about 2000 sqr ft) and had problems with the grout cracking between the rooms at the doorways. We regrouted those areas with the premixed grout in the tubs and caulk tubes from Lowes. No cracking since. The stuff in the powder bags didn't work for the little bit of flex we evidently get in the house so I would suggest staying away from that.

Love to see more pics when you get all done!

the people who make the sticky paper (SimpleMat Homepage) who suggest their "Simple Grout". I hope to do the other bathroom sink this coming weekend.
As for "sticky paper", there is another product, which I have noticed already a year ago or so.
It is called Bondera Tile Mat (Bondera Tile Mat Set - Do it Yourself Tile Adhesive On a Roll) - This is a larger mat which comes in rolls for the bigger jobs.
