Need to replace slide out toppers
Hi all
I own a 2005 Essex and I need to replace my slide out toppers. I see many companies provide this fabric but some are not the greatest quality. Any recommendations for a good quality, cut to size slide out topper for my Essex (i have 4 slide outs)
Thanks!
Greg

Today we have a 18 LA, but bought new in 04 Essex which we just sold and is up in Canada now. When sold our Essex it had the original slide out toppers on slides that had them. The key we found was to put 303 protection on them.
It stops the water from soaking through the material and last for 14 years and were still good when we sold the coach. Put 303 on once a year. The Essex had 140K miles and had been never been a covered garage. Think they will still be useable for another 4 or 5 years. Will be doing new LA soon. The covers came from Carefree of Colorado and would suggest that be were to get new covers.

Do you recommend putting 303 on the awnings also?

I would if it was not so hard to do. It would be really hard to do the big awning that come out 8 or more feet. Because the slide cover awning are out a lot more I have found that the regular window awning will be OK without being treated with 303. There is a slight cost one has when doing the treatment but the cost of the covers makes it make sense. Clean the overs with a clean wet towel and let dry before putting 303 on.

What Tom is referring to is 303 Fabric Treatment. NOT the same as the regular 303 UV Treatment.
When I replaced my awning tops about 8 years ago, I had them done my a fellow and his son in an RV Park in Corpus Christi, TX. He recommended and I went along with, Sunbrella material. After 8 years they are in excellent condition and I dare say good for many more years. I treat them every couple years with 303 Fabric Treatment.

I replaced my slide toppers with ones from Tough Top Awnings:
There are a number of utube videos online that show you exactly how to do it. We installed the toppers ourselves. The process went well and they are quality toppers.

x2 on Stone Vos for toppers, awnings and the like.
I bought two toppers last summer from them, in the Migliore vinyl. It has a shorter warranty than the acrylic, but is better-suited to the freezing weather we get in New England.
Ingrid and Chris Throgmartin, who own Stone Vos and Talin Manufacturing, are some of the most knowledgeable and pleasant folks with whom I've had the pleasure of doing business.

My toppers were failing from sun rot of the thread that's used along the edges of the fabric. I just removed the toppers, and sewed them up with outdoor, UV resistant thread along the seams. It's not hard as it's just straight line sewing following the original sew lines. They work just like new and it was a heck of a lot cheaper than replacement. This is a link for outdoor upholstery thread. If you were to take the toppers to an alteration shop, then I'd recommend taking a spool of the proper thread to them as well.

Agree with Stone Vos, we purchased the Migliore vinyl slide toppers because they are a poured vinyl not laminated. Our previous toppers were delaminating from the sun exposure . Make note that if you have wraps they may not completely cover the vinyl because they are thicker. First thing I did was put a good coat of 303 protectant on them .

303 products are very good but MUST be used only on the materials recommended. They have many different products not just one.
Be CAREFUL when anyone suggests using 303...WITHOUT CLARIFYING WHICH PRODUCT.
If you put Fabric Guard on plastic or vinyl it will remove the plasticisets and make them brittle
If you put UV protectant on fabric it will remove the water repellancy.
Great when used as intended & recommended but can actually cause damage if used incorrectly.

I highly recommend Stone Vos as mentioned earlier. We had all 4 of our slide toppers replaced with their fabric 2 years ago. Unmatched customer service and knowledge.
In addition to using extremely high quality fabric they use the best and most durable thread in the market. The thread is often the first to go.
You won't regret doing business with them.
