I can see from the many threads here in the Newmar forum that there are a lot of helpful folks out there. I am sure I will many questions about all the aspects of owning, operating, and traveling in the RV. I also hope that as I learn I will be able to help others up the learning curve.

At the moment, I do have a trivia question. I am about to close on the purchase of a model 4023. I notice that this unit, and other similar 4023s I have seen on the internet, does not have an awning over the curbside front slide. How do you keep debris from collecting on the slide roof? Is it possible to extend the main awning out to cover the slide? If so, will it retract when the wind blows? Is it normal practice to take a broom up onto the roof to sweep off the pine cones and other stuff?

I don't have a specific answer for you, BUT WELCOME.
I do not trust the wind sensor device and always pull in my awning when I leave camp. I do go on the roof and remove things from my awning toppers. I don't have a front slide on the curb side so all my slides have toppers.

There are some current models that Newmar does not equip with toppers, so I'm guessing it must not be an issue. You can buy after market toppers for your slide outs if you wish. I have toppers on mine as that's what it came with, but I believe they have a sweep like guard on the top side which may clear the leaves etc. Granted they can get caught in the slide face.
Welcome to the forum. I hope you find it helpful, interesting and entertaining. I look forward to reading your posts.

Peter

Sorry, no answer, just wanted to welcome you! You'll find lots of knowledgeable and helpful Newmar owners here.

Ours is an '06 DSDP 4023, and we have fulltimed in it for just about a year--our first RV of any kind! I hope yours gives you as much satisfaction as ours does!

If I spend any time under trees I check the slide and roof for debris.

We regularly keep our patio awning extended out about the 18" to 24" to cover the top of the curb side slide. We do this especially when we are in the trees where leaves, pine needles, etc. will fall and collect on the top.

We have the slide like the OP describes. In the nine years we've had it it's never been a problem even though we usually have the slice out without the awning out.

Wait, you'll find out if you need to do anything or need to buy anything. It's good not to worry, but be prepared. On my coach the slide with no topper has never let in any debris or water, but the other front slide (driver side) has let water in until I found out what the problem was. So, good luck, and take good notes, and ask us when there is a problem.

I have a 2011 Ventana. The front curbside slide doesn't have a topper and is protected by the awning (if extended). There is a wind sensor which I have not tested as my paranoia causes me to manually retract. One of these days I'll test it.

If I were parked more than a few days without the awning under trees I'd probably climb up and sweep. Otherwise unlikely.

Welcome to the Newmar Forum, JohnParker and enjoy your 2007 DSDP - We enjoy ours, a 2006, and do not have any problems with the curb side slide-out which is made without a topper - Do not use the awning to protect it and it rarely carries any debris unless you are close to trees !
