His will be our first winter with a diesel. We are supposed to leave on Friday, how far in advance do we need to plug in the block heater?

What is the outside temp?
What engine?

Unless it's below freezing you won't need the heater. I've rarely used ours.

2 hours should be enough time. But even overnight wouldn't hut anything.

It' s a cummins turbo either a 330 or 350. Would it hurt anything if it is on longer?

A couple hours should do it. You can leave them plugged in all night with no issues. Worst case cycle the grid heater twice if you forget to plug it in when its really cold. A Cummins will start well below zero. It may take a few minutes for it to start running normal, but it will start.

WE leave all our trucks plugged in overnight even days at a time in Alaska, no ill effects.

We start using the block heaters around +30 then go to running the engines 24/7 once temps hit -30. I have left my truck plugged in for as much as 3 weeks.

No, we leave our truck and equipment heaters on for the weekend if it gets cold enough

Hi riverbender,
I leave mine on all night, the night before travel. Every engine is different. My ISC 330 is a bit persnickety about cold weather. Below 60 degrees I turn on the heater. If I don't, Mr. Cummins will not be happy for a good 5 minutes after starting.

It was low twenties here last night. At around noon it was 40 degrees.

I cranked for about 2-3 seconds and it fired right up. If it hadn't started I was going for the Aqua-Hot to Pre-heat it

The other thing you should consider is a fuel additive to prevent the fuel from jelling up at low temperatures. Usually anything below 20 degrees farenheit and we add Howes.(brand name) It has to be added at least an hour before you shut the engine off, so that it has time to circulate throughout the fuel system.

Befroe we left on our current trip, outside temp was 14 degrees. Within two hours my 425 Cummins was 90 degrees water temp.

Pretty sure it all depends on what temp your are starting out at.
