Newmar downgrades 2018 Spartan Dutchstar brakes(rumour or real)

It has been alleged that the 4 disks brakes will be 2 in 2018. Since as I understand it will increase the stopping distance it must be for cost reasons. Does anyone actually know this to be the case or just a potential. I know it has been raised as a positive for the Spartan chassis.

Do you have some information as to where you heard this.
You could call Newmar or Spartan to find out from MFG's.

Good reason to order a 2017 Dutch Star now with disc brakes on all axles.

I posted this question in an incorrect thread. I got an answer from 1 person as a "yes". I have sent a message o Spartan.

If anyone is in Tampa they can ask Newmar. I would think Newmar would not answer a qu strong on future product offerings.

Yes! I was told by Newmar corporate that this will be the case.

Just took delivery of a 2017 4369 w/ Spartan chassis. I bought it BECAUSE of the full disc brake system. HD disc brakes are the best type in the industry. Been proven again and again. I would not have purchased the coach with out them. This is our 10th coach. Brakes on most of them have been marginal. I have always prayed I would never have to make a panic stop in the other coaches. Too bad if they put drum brakes on the Spartan going forward.

Spec,

Did corporate indicate why? Cost or "speration of coach lines"

Stretch,

Find it hard to believe Newmar would take a step back on Safety once they gave it for cost saving.

I was told it was a one time incentive that Spartan gave Newmar for 2017 to get more Spartan orders. Newmar's current mix is about 60/40 FL/SP. It will not be available in 2018, I was told. The problem is that many dealers don't even know about this so they can give buyers the info. So it's kind of self-defeating. My dealer didn't know about it (no fault of his) and I only found out about it by a fluke when I called Newmar about something else. You can't hold the dealers responsible if Newmar doesn't tell them. Oh well!

That's too bad if true. Whether an incentive from Spartan or not, it is a huge differentiator and would seem like a step backwards IMO.

I'm not blaming the dealers. I'm just surprised that it was offered and now taken away. I wonder how Spartan and Newmar will spin this for 2018. My guess is they will keep silent and hope nobody notices. How else would you play it. Just remove a key safety feature with out any opportunity to add it back.

I'm sure they would not add in traction control one year and then remove it the next.

I'm not ready to purchase in 2017 but looking forward for 2018.

I totally agree. I was very surprised when Newmar told me this. And for sure, you can't blame the dealers if they're not told about it. In terms of how they try and spin it, I think you're right - they will definitely keep silent about it. The problem is that because of this website, very little can be kept silent and they will have to come up with some kind of answer when people start asking about it for the 2018 models.

I have no idea how much disc brakes cost but in 2016 the MA was about 8500 SP over Fl? How much was that the additional cost of the 2 axles of disc brakes as compared to the other features? Assume 40% is disc brakes so about 3600 for the 2 axles of disc brakes. Remember your upgrading from drums as an an incremental cost.

This is wild guess stuff. I do not know the real cost. Not a lot of money given the option of 6300 for heated floors.

Happy New Year
