Newmar Order Backlog
New to the forum and new to Newmar. Working with a dealer looking at either purchasing a spec 2018 New Aire 3343 or ordering one to be built.
Dealer says that Newmar is nearly sold out of 2018 positions and that by placing an order today I can expect delivery in late Spring of 2018. I note several folks have recently posted that they have placed an order. Is this the backlog currently being experienced by everyone placing an order for a Newmar coach?

I just checked on a new DSDP this week and was quoted March or April 2018 if ordered now. I don't think we are going to order just yet but that is what I was told by Newmar sales. Individual dealers may have a stock order that they could replace with a custom order but I did not check on that as we aren't quite ready.

from WA State!
We've had two DSDP's and probably should have gotten a third.

Last week when we met with Mat Utley (VP of Service) and Brian Fauchs(Customer Service Manager), they mentioned that they were almost sold out of build slots for the 2018 model year. They were already meeting on the 2019 models. Yes, there are some dealers with build slots that can insert your specifications on their previously slotted coaches. You will have more success with your larger dealers such as NIRV, Steinbring, North Trails, and a few others out west. There are probably others so ding me for not mentioning them; these are the ones I know.

i should think a dealer would be happy to replace an order slot that was for dealer inventory with a pre sold coach....the price is the issue...will they give it up, or will they roll the dice on a stock unit and believe they can sell it and make more on it....

Noticed back in June that orders then were expected delivers by Sept-Oct (3-4 months). Now August orders are expected by March-April (7-8 months). How can situations change that fast? Not sure I understand all this. Is Newmar actually selling that many more coaches than they can produce?

Clearly the economy is heating up with back logs growing. Next prices will rise sharply. RV sales are often a leading indicator of a building economy.

I have heard that they are sold out for 2018, building at a 9 unit per day pace, that the unemployment rate there is 0 percent, in June there was. 1% increase in base MSRP due to the need to spent more $ on labor, and a production pace so intense they are having trouble keeping some of their employees. It's a great year for Newmar

I read it's a two fold situation, many Millennial's are choosing to live in RV's full time , and a lot of Baby Boomers are getting older and retiring with money to purchase the higher end RV's. To your point Newmar has had two price increases for 2018 model year already.

It's not like early 2019's are a solution, it's production time that is at capacity. Wouldn't matter what year you call what their building, they are at max capacity

I think a lot changed on June 30th. Orders poured in ahead of the price increase. I think Newmar is still digging out from that day.

newmar says they only build "ordered" coaches....or "sold" coaches.....whatever parlance you want to use....
i kinda laugh at that, because that includes coaches that are "sold" to a dealer.....so with the excitement of the 2018 model year, being 50 yrs for the company and whatnot, and the reasonable economy and strong stock market, with interest rates remaining low, and retirees pulling the trigger on coaches, and other demographic groups buying/trading up, the dealers are looking to build up some inventory to sell....as lead times for an order will be a turn off to many...they will buy off the lot and not wait...so if they can't find a newmar they'll go buy a tiffin or entegra or whatever other brand they can find that meets their needs....
and the dealers are also buying up order slots ahead of fall camping shows....
think about the hershey show coming up in about a month...the dealer that represents newmar there (RV one) prolly bought up a bunch of order slots in the production chain, expecting to sell X number of coaches at the show, with their "show special" prices....those are now "sold" coaches in the production chain for newmar, and if they can't sell them all, they will take them as inventory....so this pushes out delivery times for someone not ordering from RV one at the hershey show....even though these units are not "sold" to a customer, they are "sold" to a dealer...
it's a game...limit supply and demand often increases....now, newmar has a hot, quality product, that certainly helps...but again, it's a game the way they spin it......
next spring there will be many 2018 coaches on the dealer lots....just like this spring there was many 2017's on dealer's lots (and some lots still have many 2017's, some even a few 2016's kicking around).....if you're willing to compromise on colors / options, there will be deals out there....heck, there are 2018's for sale on dealer lots now...and if you are willing/able to pay, you can buy one.....just don't expect too large of a discount....yet....

while any factory may 'bend their own rules' from time to time, depending on the economy, employment, dealer orders, etc... my understanding is that Newmar does NOT build a unit without it having been specifically ordered by one of their dealers, period.
they don't have a 'side lot' where they store unsold units waiting for a dealer to order it - any unit that comes off the end of the assembly line immediately goes to a transport company, ready to be delivered to the ordering dealer, except those with 'customer delivery' where the end customer is picking it up themselves.
My understanding is also that EVERY unit manufactured is paid for BEFORE delivery. You can understand, then, why a manufacturer like this would not produce units just to keep production going, there would be no CASH associated with it.
Dealers order units as they see the need for them on their lots, but the factory does not just 'assign' production units to dealers 'just because' they are producing them and need to send them somewhere. Certainly there are larger dealers that seem to take all they can get, but they still order them, with the style and floor plans they think will sell, one at a time just like any other dealer, just more often.
The flip side is that in 'slow' times the factory may not be able to employ as many workers, making for a more 'seasonal' employee base, which is harder to manage, but certainly better for the business bottom-line. We saw a lot of that several years ago, but now it seems like there may be a 'lack' of qualified employees - not a bad place to be, but yet still a little aggravating.
