Battery draw

Hi Turbo, thanks for the quick reply. I have also read your complete posting on your New Aire impressions, great work.

I was using the Silver Leaf to turn off the inverter. I was using a clamp meter read the power draws. I am afraid that you confirmed what I was worrying about and that no matter what I do short of disconnecting all of the battery cables some power is going to be constantly drawn off. I am storing in a barn, so solar wouldn't even be that much help. I have done this for the past 25 years, but never with a "smart" coach. I guess for now, I will just have to get out the wrenches.

Thanks again,

Not easy with the NA house batteries. They connect these batteries with a gang of three cables.

In your situation some portable solar panels outside the barn my be the best solution. Just need to make sure you have a good solar controller.

Battery draw

I looked at it all this morning and saw all the cables. Don't have a lot of other options at this point. I may be able to get a long extension and a 15 amp plug, but I am worried that a breaker might trip and then I would be screwed. The barn is not used much in the summer and no one would notice a tripped breaker. I have Rozie activated, but don't have a permanent Wi-Fi in the coach to monitor it. Maybe I can talk my wife to leaving her cell phone in the coach as a hot spot. Thanks again.

Turbo pretty much outlined it - just pull the ground off the house batteries because it has two 12 volt feed cables one for devices and another for the inverter. Then snatch either cable from the chassis battery and you'll be good to go. Keep in mind the switch on the chassis battery does not kill everything, I heard from Freightliner the engine/trans processor is still hot with the switch off.

If you want your batteries to be extra happy when you're away, hook up two separate trickle charges, one for the house and another for the chassis for long term storage. You can just lay them on the ground so there won't be any hot electrical devices in the coach should something go haywire.

Regards

Good advice. Just be aware my house batteries "trickle in float" at around 6 amps @ 13.7 volts on the solar charge controller.

Perhaps when we all get rich like Turbo - we can afford to install wall to wall solar panels on our RV's. LOL

1kW of solar costs about 2.5% of the purchase price of a typical NA. Given the design of the NA electrical system, I view solar power as required equipment.

Given the posts on this forum documenting complete discharge of both chassis battery and house batteries in the NA, in some cases on many occasions, during storage and maintenance, it is very possible that solar power may actually pay for itself over the life of the coach. Nothing impacts the life of these battery systems than the repeated complete discharge of the batteries.

Given the cost of other options on the NA, 1kw of solar seems pretty reasonable given the benefits.

Battery draw

I have talked my wife into leaving her phone on the coach with the hot spot active. Probably have to buy her a new one. I will leave Rozie and the SkyPro and monitor it. I will be plugged into a 15 amp plug and will have the everything else off. I will use an extension cord with an indicator light that will be on when it is hot. I will be out on a boat, but probably not more than a 3 or 4 hour car ride if I need to get back to do anything with it. I am plugged into a 15 amp plug now and have been using 15 amps plugs for about 10 days on my trip from Florida up to northern Michigan. Stopping to visit friends and family, I don't drive that slow. I would imagine that the built in intelligent charger should do a better job than a hang on trickle charger. Mike I know that you don't like to be plugged in all the time unattended because of lightning strikes, but I am in a metal building and won't have any jacks down. At least that is the plan as of this hour. Still may go back to just stripping the cables off the batteries. Thanks again for the advise. Next year I should be better prepared.

Mike, I have never had the wifiranger and MyRozie stay connected to a cellular hotspot for more than 2 days without disconnecting and then not connecting again. I do have the failover set to reconnect setup properly in the wifiranger control panel. When on my home router the wifiranger will always reconnect if it looses connection, but not on a cellular hotspot.

I don't know what causes this issue and also don't know if it is specific to my setup or if it is a common issue. When the wifiranger randomly looses connection with the cellular hotspot I must go into the control panel and manually reconnect.

Mine has stayed up for as long as two months at a time. Most of my failures are "operator induced". The WiFi Ranger user interface is very complicated owing to all the features. It is very easy to screw things up.

Having said that my WiFi Ranger is always connected to my Pepling Max BR modem/router using a 5gHz WiFi connection. Using iPhones or iPads in the hotspot mode is not stable in my experience.

Do you have your main Wi-Fi checked with an "X" on the right side of the page?

WiFi Hotspot

I had the coach connected last night to a hot spot on a Samsung V. So far, so good. I will be putting the coach in the barn today and plugging into a 15 amp circuit. I will be in the area for the next two weeks, so it will be easy for me to get back if something goes astray. I am on the Sky Pro with only the phone's hot spot checked. Hopefully I will have cell service inside the barn.

Hi Mike, what do you mean by "main Wi-Fi?" Are you referring to Wi-Fi source that it as the top of the list? I have the "X" checked on both the home router and the cellular hot spot.
