Newmar value question and didn't want to highjack a thread

There are a lot of threads in regards to trade in value, depreciation, etc, but, I am still puzzled. A recent thread was discussing the idea of buying a new Canyon Star with the idea of trading it in 2-3 years for a Diesel Coach. Most people said that the person would take a tremendous hit with the depreciation. I don't understand because what I see, the difference in a used 2017 vs a new 2018 is nothing, and a 2016 vs a 2018, is not a huge drop off. It makes sense to me that there would indeed be a huge depreciation for the first year or two but, I swear, I'm not seeing it in the classified ads.

This leads me to my main question. Does a dealer, and an individual, list a coach for sale with the idea that it is common to discount it "x" percent? If this is the case, what is the "x"? I know it varies, but, with Newmars, is there an "x" factor?

There is a lot of demand for Newmar right now and limited supply. On our 2016 DSDP cost around 311,000 and is selling now for about 285,000. We were offered 265,000 next year by a dealer when we trade it on a 2019.

Dealers sell at retail, which for Newmar’s is 20 - 25 percent off MSRP, sometimes a little more or less. If you have a trade, they buy at wholesale. Advertised prices mean very little. It’s the spread that has meaning and that’s where you will find the depreciation.

Just looking at classified ads and comparing what units are listed at is a little misleading. If you could see a nationwide list of what certain model Newmars recently sold for used then that would tell the true story.

I’ve had 4 motorhomes in the last 20 years, I always purchase used, so I have no experience with MSRP or dealers.
Right now is the first time I’ve seen the market depreciation slowing dramatically, and Newmar seems to be better than prevailing market.
With that said.....over long term depreciation has been terrible. Ive lost a ton of money every time I sold one. You better think of 20% per year. These things are “ a hole in the road, you throw $100 bills in as fast as you can”.

Doing some simple math on my 2005 Newmar gas...... assuming the original buyer got it for 20% off the MSRP sticker, and based on a recent offer I got (not for sale though) the depreciation has averaged around 6% for the past 12 years. I know it would be higher in the early years than recent.

I think this is one of the very first things most have to except when deciding to purchase an RV, you are going to lose money. If not paying cash put down as much as possible to stay ahead of the depreciation curve. We plan on holding on to our coach for awhile which is why we spent a little more to get what we want within reason. Also decided to purchase while I'm still working to maintain debt free track for retirement. We will see how that goes. lol Bottom line this is more of a life style decision and family time which in the end I really couldn't put a price tag on. Only live once. ENJOY!

pplmotorhomes.com is a good resource to see what used coaches are actually selling for in real world.

I don't understand. How does PPL's listings of advertised units tell me any more about what they are actually selling for than looking at listings on RVTrader?

Newmar value question and didn't want to highjack a thread

Note that almost all the product moving through PPL are consignment sales. So the prices listed reflect actual real-world negotiated transactions between private owners (in most cases, sometimes they have foreclosed inventory from the banks/finance companies).
