Newmar's New Inverted Mirrors

All the '07 Newmar motorhomes appear now to come with the hanging upside down mirrors. Unlike the previous convential types that were viewed through the windsheild, the new ones require the viewing of the left (driverside) through the side window. I found it somewhat ackward not to mention it adds additional vehicle width. Additionally some light conditions may cause a poor vision due to reflections from the dash area. The reason you can not reposition this mirror to be viewed through the windsheild is the shorter support arm. The arm is quite a bit shorter than that of the right one.

I took a close look at this the other day and believe it would be easy to retify by replacing the driverside arm with the same as on the passenger side. This would allow the repositioning of it to be viewed through the windsheild. The arms appear to be the same make-up, no left and right, just one shorter than the other.

I'm going to order the longer one and will replace the driverside when I get a new coach thus head off a problem before it becomes one.

Peter, as you may remember we were discussing this in an earlier topic,but it wasn't a mirror "specific" topic so maybe we'll get more "hits" with this one.

Other than the obvious wire splicing needed to lengthen the control and heat wires for the mirror, I don't know why it wouldn't work, but standby for a report on this issue when I get my paws on my coach on Thursday morning....I'll actually see her Wednesday evening and even stay in the Vectra parked next to her, but will most likely arrive after they close.

I'll give you my opinion,as well as the opinion of the very knowledgeable service manager there at Howards....

LUGNUT: when I look at the 07 pictures on Newmar's "products" page, I only see the inverted mirrors on DSDP and higher coaches. Must be a status thing! ED

We have a 2006 DutchStar with the inverted mirrors. The problem is indeed a reflection off the front windshield onto the drivers side window, causing the driver to look through a very distracting reflection. The reflection can be eliminated by "hanging" a piece of somewhat opaque material so that the matierial points directly at the driver. We accomplished this by using a 12" strip of bungee cord to hold a 12"x18" piece of unexposed x-ray film that was folded to give a 12" tall X 9" wide shield. The bungee cord was gently "forced" into the groove between the side window and the window frame. The film does not compromise my view since I am looking down the thickness of the film folded in 1/2. I have contacted Newmar about a more permanent fix, but no reply yet. If the longer arm works, maybe they will retrofit the arm to all coaches 2006 forward.

No thanks, we'll stick with the regular mirrors, fortunately the 07 ATME still has them.

Please excuse my ignorance, but could that be All Star Mid-Engine??

Yep, I call it the ASME but Newmar calls it the ATME(T-for toyhauler I guess, but really it is a garage or with some models a large storage box).

Whew.....thought I'd missed an entire model!!

Howard RV got one of the All-Stars in with the "big box" on the side.......kind of weird,definitely different.
I guess bikes and other toys would go in there,but I'd certainly think the "garage" model would be more functional.

The garage model with the third AC at 9' provides enough space for the W/D, Harley, etc. and doubles as a private second bedroom(outside entrance) with TV, Computer, etc.(Queen Air Mattress).

Just home from Wilmington with the Essex, I guess I received a pretty good indoctrination into the hanging mirrors,as I drove both day and night with them....

First observation is the passenger side mirror needs to be swung forward and the mirror base turned a bit,as the bottom right of the mirror really is usuless behind the pillar right now. Will fix that tomorrow....

The driver side mirror is going to be something to get used to,as it felt I was always turning my head and REALLY looking "up".....I raised the seat a bit and that helped a little....

Took some pictures, will leave that for another day soon....hitting the sack!!

I will be interested to see if the mirror thing is a problem once the newness wears off on driving the rig or is it just a change we will become used to.
