Recently I was on the forum asking information on a jacobs exhaust brake. Well I finally slid under the motorhome and removed the brake from the pipe. Fairly simple process. I then placed the brake on my workbench and tested using my air compressor. The valve did not close entirely with the proper air pressure. On further inspection I realized that the air cylinder was being restricted internally. The return spring inside the cylinder was completly shattered. I found the part # and got the part from caterpillar. Replaced the cylinder and test drove the motorhome. What a difference! So if you are having white knuckle trips down the mountain passes, a little inspection may save your life and your marriage. This does require, maybe a bit more than entry level mechanical ability!
