Odd AGS behavior: turns genny on for no reason

Setup:

* AGS is enabled; set to come on at 11.8V and external AC
* Magnum reads Float charging at 13.1V
* AC units are on
* DW had washer, dryer, and toaster oven on
* 50A power is working to the coach (verified)

Event:

* AGS turns on the generator
* I turn it off
* About 2 minutes later, it turns back on.
* This repeats three times until I disabled the AGS
* Now (20 minutes later), Magnum shows Float Charging @ 13.1V with no lights on the panel anywhere.
* Everything seems to work in the coach

So why did the AGS turn on the genny? Thoughts?

I don't know much about AGS, but is there a setting that starts the gen for exercise? Just a thought.

No, Steve. You have to specifically select Test to do that.

I don't have the answer, but a similar condition. Any time I enable the AGS with external trigger from the AC it repeatedly starts, runs briefly, then shuts down again. Doesn't seem to matter what the AC is set for. Haven't really gotten into the diagnostic journey since we've been on the road and really not needed AC where we've been.

The AGS display should tell you why it started...e.g. temp / voltage.

So, if it was temp and the thermostat was calling for power, perhaps there was a glitch in the shore power delivery. Maybe a loose connection on the ATS that might cause a momentary outage which would activate the AGS

As PanJh said, you can review the status as to why. I experienced the same behavior e as rly on, and discovered that the ags had old firmware, and the magnum had a loose ground.

In addition, low voltage can be caused when on 30amp with inverter assist features that newmar has enabled.

I installed the BMK, and now only use SOC for the ags, as it is far more reliable.

I just posted this same problem yesterday and am following closely.

Some of you have suggested that you can find out WHY the AGS turned on the genny by looking at something on the display. I have looked for that screen, but have never found it.

Can you post directions to get to a screen on the Magnum that will show the reason the AGS started the genny?

Here are the relevant parts of the manual. It is section 11.
I have also attached the manual.

You will go to the status screen, then scroll thru the options.Click image for larger version

I had the same problem.

Leave a campground, not turn off the AGS and when I get home - the genset is running? The only thing on is the refer on the inverter as I drive.

Why?

I happened to be at Newmar last month for some work and mentioned this problem.

When I picked up my rig, Newmar techs told me my rear most + battery terminal was dirty/corroded. They said when they put the meter on it, no voltage. Well seems this terminal is the one the AGS system uses to evaluate whether the genset is needed to be turned on and charge the batteries.

Huh........????? Whodathunk?????

.......and I check the batteries often and never saw a dirty terminal - but it is pretty far back there - even with the battery tray pulled out....and my back only allows me to bend so far........LOL

So now I have a can of NAPA Battery Terminal Cleaner and a can of NAPA Battery Terminal Protector.....it's what they use.........

As Mom used to say, "We'll see....!" LOL

Oh - - they also told me to go the status screen for the reason the AGS activated the genset. "We'll see."

Hope this gives you something else to check.......Good luck.

RedBaron & Indy, I appreciate the info regarding the possible cause and status. I have the manual, but never paid attention to using the Meter button to access statuses. Will take a look at these things today.

Here's an update...and the problem still exists.

I put the RV in a storage lot with 30A service the other day. Verified that 30A is working, turned on ONE of the A/C units (set to 85 degrees). Then enabled the AGS to come on with EXT temp OR a start voltage of 11.8V.

About three hours later, I returned and the genny was running. The A/C was running, 30A still had no issues, and voltage was normal. Even though the manual described a method to find the reason for the activation that involved pressing "Meter" and going from there, I couldn't find a way to do it. But then I pressed the "AGS" button and got to a screen that (I think) was telling me the reason. It was a "status" and it said "Start Temp". I believe that it started because of the coach temperature, which (to me) means that the A/C needed to come on and it thought - for whatever reason - that there wasn't any external power.

My plan is to call the Magnum folks in a day or two. For now, it's disabled. (Hmmm. As I type this I'm wondering if my switch to EXT is still set properly. Got to look at that, too.)

Again, thanks for all of your suggestions and input folks!

It does not look at the conditions with "and" but rather "or". So based on your settings, as soon as the ac is needed your generator will start, regardless of 30amp power.

There is not a mode for emergency power fail, and ac needed then run generator. I assume that is what you are trying to do.
