At around 125,000 miles, my 2000 Dutchstar odometer rolled back to 0. It has a cummins chassis and I checked to make sure it wasn't the trip mileage but was the "total" miles. Now it looks like I only have 25 miles on my rig. Any thoughts???

My first thought was you were backing up excessively. Then I had to rule that out. Now I'm thinking you have a defective odometer.

It is probably an electronic speedo that is controlled by the computer and has nothing stored in the speedo.

Thanks to all for replies. I was a little concerned because we are planning on putting it up for sale and I don't want it to be negatively affected by an obvious incorrect odometer. They'll probably believe me when I say it has 125K plus the odometer because who would ever choose to say that if it weren't true.

I would say it has only about 50,000 on it and your stretching the truth just to impress the potential buyer.
Just kidding I agree and I would believe you

Well look at that. You have a brand new rig and didn't have to pay a penny to get it. Must be a hitch in the gittyup somewhere. I suspect the chassis mfg might be able to help you out.

I would think if you note it on the bill of sale and the title then there would be no issue.

When the chassis gets inspected the Registry may make note of a new mileage change and question the change.
Should check with MFG and see what they can do, some displays can be read by MFG to correct the new display.

I'd take it to a Freightliner dealer to see what it would take to get it fixed before putting it on the market. In most cases the mileage is stored somewhere other than the display module.
Trying to sell a vehicle with an odometer that does not display the actual mileage can be a hassle. Here in Wisconsin you have to provide a sworn statement as to the actual mileage, the mileage showing on the odometer and provide a legitimate reason for the difference. I doubt that the DMV would accept "it just went back to 0 by itself" as an acceptable explaination. It will also be difficult for any subsiquent owner to sell the vehicle with an innacurate odometer.
When our motorhome was still under warranty we had a problem with the volt meter in the instrument cluster. After several days at the local Ford garage they were unable to resolve the problem. One option was to replace the entire cluster with a new one that had 0 miles on the odometer. That was the last option on the list as far as the garage was concerned. They would have had to jump through to many legal hoops just to do it, and provide certified records for the reason it was done anytime the vehicle came up for sale.
Fortunately they did eventually reslove the problem without resorting to replacing the instrument cluster.

If it is an electronic speedo they should be able to reprogram the correct mileage into it. I know it can be done on automobiles. We used to order them from the manufacturerer if the spedo had to be replaced and they would send it in with the correct mileage.

My F-53 Breeze speedo jumped to 40 MPH when I first started moving, then increased when I got over 40. It went in with ~16K on the clock and the repair shop is going to replace the mechanical cluster.
Will they have it set to the correct mileage or will I have to show the emission police a receipt every time I have to have it smog checked? They have a hard enough time figuring out why my freshly painted `94 Dodge Ram 1500 Stepside, with 130K on it, looks so good.

I had a new module installed in my Workhorse a few years ago and they programmed it to show the miles I had before the replacement.
