One of the upsides to the years that you are looking for is "pre-DPF/DEF" engines. The coach we found has the ISM 450 HP, 1550 ft/lb, which is no longer made. If you go back a few more years, you can get a pre EGR engine.

Newmar has a good resale value on older coach's going back into the early 90's.

Great tips here folks THANKS!

Here is a model I'm kind of liking but subject to change once I'm able to actually buy it - I'm needing to sell a house for the down and think I'll get a better deal in the fall.

I'm not sure you can short cut the process by expecting others to validate your choice. But maybe that is one way to do it.

The price does not seem unreasonable to me as a starting point. 2008 seems to generally push the starting numbers over 100k, at the moment, though not in all cases for a Newmar dp.

Also not unreasonable to buy an older year and pay around 50k for a good used Newmar...they key is your personal verification capability.

If you are not ready now, financially, you have time to keep educating yourself. One of the best times will be 4th quarter this year as both dealers and private sellers will want to get a sale completed before 2016.

I think coming out of winter you can be prepared to hit the road for the summer.

All EPA emissions equipment.
EGR Valve - exhaust gas recirculation - 2002
DPF - diesel particulate filter - 2007
DEF - diesel exhaust fluid - 2010
Many model years have engines from the previous years EPA specs, like my 2007. The 2007 Allstar you are looking at may also.

Is that a mid-engine diesel?

My "Older Newmar" is a '95 Kountry Star DP with about 130,000 miles on it now. I spend about $1,000 per year on upgrades or repairs and about $500 annually on servicing things. I replaced the Starter, radiator, hoses and belts when I bought it, and one A/ C unit and tires, plus font wheel seals and shocks in the last three years. In addition, I put down a plank vinyl floor this winter that looks fabulous. Still using the original convection oven, water heater, and domestic refrigerator. I am looking at replacing the second A/C unit as a precaution for this summer. This was my first MH and we are loving it. I like to think of myself as frugal, but my wife says I'm cheap. I'd guess I have about $23k wrapped up in this so far, and I could walk away from it today with no regrets. In summary, buy what you like when you see it and prepare yourself for some lumps and bumps along the way. Happy Motoring!!!

We bought an 08 Dutch Star a year ago at what I consider fair market value at a dealer. Paid an extra 5K for a warranty package and have used 3K for stuff. There will always be odds and ends to attend to most I could handle myself. I like the combination of Spartan chassis and Cummins 425 ISL in the coach. Maintenance on those items have been as expected. It had 35K miles and now has 42K miles. Would I do it again? absolutely We use it 5 -6 months a year and have had no regrets. hope this helps. That allstar model is one of the few mid-engine coaches and my biggest concern would be service on it. Maybe it wouldn't be a problem at all to a knowledgeable person.

Thankyou! I had no idea about mid-grade engines! Guess thats why the price. How do I learn which models have this type of engine? Learning lots here already!

It's not mid-grade engine it is mid engine orientation. The engine is in the middle of the coach rather than the rear, in order to have a garage or storage space in the rear. They usually bring a premium, depending on floor plan, due to their rarity. They offered one of the few diesel Class A toy haulers.
