Operating Roof A/C while traveling- 2015 DS
I have gotten mixed opinions as to ability to run roof A/C units while traveling. I have a 2015 DS 4366. Is it possible to run roof A/C with only the engine running, or does it require the generator to be running? Any comments on this situation would be appreciated.

Unless Newmar came up with a a miracle solution in 2015, you will need to run your generator.

Larry: I could not find any info on the topic that made me believe you could run roof AC on engine power. I think it is tied to the gennie like in most units. Many of us run the gennie while driving down the road...but our manuals say it is a safety issue.

You have to run the generator for the source of power to the AC's while driving and when not hooked up to shore power. The Newmar manuals, or anything I've read do not say it's a hazard to run the generator while driving, they are built to run while driving.

Its amazing what you can learn just by reading the operators manual
What are these opinions you speak of concerning running the gen set while driving

I'm pretty sure Newmar does not wire any of the roof A/C's to the inverter, which would be necessary to run it on DC from the alternator and house battery bank. So the answer would be you must run the generator to run the roof A/C while traveling.

Yep, got to run the genny in everything but King Aire. For that model, you get 16 house batteries and a second inverter.

Thank you for all the replies. This confirms my belief that the generator has to be running or be connected to adequate shore power. I'm going to challenge my dealer/service tech with this question again. Thanks for the ammunition.

Larry, it's likely been said before (but my ADD doesn't allow me to read every post) but..... the engine spins the alternator, which in turn produces voltage to replenish the batteries. ALL of that stuff is 12 Volts
However, ALL of our A/C units operate on 120Volts. Your coach can produce 120V in one of two ways; either via genset operating and producing as much 120 as you need, or by your inverter, which takes the battery power and converts it...making the alternator really struggle if you're using the inverter for refrigerator, water heater, and A/C units.
There is virtually nothing gained by not using the appliance that produces just what your A/C units need; the genset. HTH
P.S. Mine was a generic response...and after reading some more threads that are specific to your coach, post #7 seems to sum it up.

You would need a very large inverter and a very large battery bank in order to run the ACs on battery power. The DS (or even the Mountain Aire or Essex) doesn't have this capability.
YES, you need to run the generator to produce 110v AC for the roof top generators on your 2015 DS 4366. We run the generator all the time while traveling down the road in order to keep our 2015 Ventana 4037 cool in warm weather. It is a VERY common practice.

As a side note, make sure the generator breaker is in the "ON" position or you will get a controller E7 error code and your air will not run.
