Upon removing my coach deep cells for the winter I noticed a coil of wires laying on top of a tray marked "Solar Prep". Shouldn't these have been attached to the bateries? I climbed up on the roof yesterday and sure enough there is a panel up there. This panel is attached to the roof itself. My last coach it was attached tot the top of the A/C cover. Would there be any preventive maintenance around the edges as far as leakage?? I didn't stay atop to long as it was cold and some slick spots here and there.
Any info would be appreciated.

It sounds like the solar panel you saw was the standard 5 watt that is wired to the chassis batteries, this is on all Newmar coaches. The solar prep. is for the house batteries should you decide to install additional solar panels. The small watt would do zero for your house bank usage and is only a maintainer for the chassis. I hope this helps.

Thanks Lug_Nut. Any idea where the Solar Prep wires run to on the roof? Not that I'm putting one up there now but might in the future.

I don't know where exactly they would terminate the top end. If you contact Newmar engineering, they should be able to tell you. It will definately be in a Newmar known position so they know exactly where to cut into the roof to get it. Probably in the least cluttered area on the roof, where the panels would go.

With Newmar's solar prep the wires are coiled under the roof. There will be a plate on the roof marked "Solar Prep" and the wires are under that plate. There is no hole in the roof that needs to be caulked because the plate is stuck on the roof with caulking, but there is no hole under the plate.

If you decide to install solar panels you will remove that plate and cut a hole in the roof and pull the wires up. The wires run from the roof down in the motorhome to the circuit breaker area and that is where you will install the solar charge controller. From there the wires run down to the house batteries, but they are not connected.

If you do not plan to install solar panels you don't need to do anything. If you want to install solar panels Newmar has already run the wires for you so you don't have to cut holes and fish the wires through the walls and floor.

There should be a plate, but there was no plate on my MH.

On a visit to the factory, the techs identified the roof location for me.
