Peeling paint

I've got a 2005 Dutch Star with fairly extensive paint peeling on the roof portion of the front and rear caps as well as the sides above the awning line. Looking for any suggestions on a repaint shop and possible costs in the lower 48. I would guess it's a result of extensive sun exposure.

Your clear coat is going bad. You're making the right decision to repaint the entire top, there is no easy/cheap repair. My 05 Diplomat did the same thing. After messing with some DIY paint repairs, it only extended what was inevitable, I finally had it repaired. They painted the top of the front and rear caps and everything on the sides above the rain rail.

Some of the issues are caused by the dark paint the manufacturers just HAD to use along the roof line. I had them start the paint repair at the top of the windshield and had them change the color along the entire roofline to the lightest color in my paint scheme. They ended the paint job just above the rear running lights.

Once done, the coach looked great and unless you knew the original color scheme you wouldn't know it had been painted. The original cost was $2500.00, but they found some "checking" in the front cap that was an additional $500.00.

I'm sure you're going to get all kinds of suggested solutions....here's mine.

I just had the tops of my front and rear caps repainted by a paint shop recommended and paid for by the manufacturer of my coach.

They completely sanded both areas, sprayed a base coat, then sprayed a clear coat. They sanded the clear coat, applied another clear coat and then cut and buffed that. Total cost was just over $3,000.

Have been using 303 on the roof area and front/rear cap for years and have not seen an clear coat damage. Do it 4 times a year and only takes 10 minutes to do. Coach always out side and live in the sunny southern California.

I'll try that 303 after I get it repainted. Pretty pricey here in Alaska so I'm planning on looking for a good place when I snowbird next winter.

I doubt 303 saved your paint. My 05 Diplomat got waxed 3-4 times a year. The problem was a paint change mandated by the Feds in 2004/2005. You're also talking about an Essex that probably received twice to three times the clear coat than the Dutch Star or Diplomat line.

Couple of years ago Newmar had a special price to repaint and clear coat the roof because of the problem. It was $1200 at that time. I had a quote of $3000 by a reliable paint shop. I took it to Nappanee.

My previous 05KSDP had no peeling what so ever. I did not do anything special to it. My new to me 08 DSDP has the peeling on the dark paint.

My 2010 Ventana has it on the light paint all the way around the coach on the roof areas so I don't think it's the dark paint that's the problem. As I understand it, the clear coat has to bond with the paint through a chemical reaction. If the clear coat is not applied at the correct time this chemical reaction does not happen and the clear coat just lays on top of the paint waiting to fail. Kevin Tetz has some U-Tube videos on a temp repair of clear coat finish that are worth the time to understand the process.
I have a question into Newmar now on what's it gonna cost me to get it fixed. If I can't get the $1200 deal, I'll look locally.
